ok question for you if you pit it in drive will the car go forward. if you slide the shifter between park and N can you hear it trying to go into gear. you might have reverse out on the transmission if it goes into drive in the proper place ment on the shifter indecator and N And Park but not reverse.

Yes the reverse is the only problem

I dont know how it happened if some one borrowed the car and slamed it in reverse when still moving forward or some thing but sounds like you have reverse out in the trans. many shops will not charge you to look at some thing like this if they think that they are the one that is going to be fixing it. take it to a shop and have them give it a look and see if the linkage on the trans is not loose.

I thought it may be the linkage but had to be sure

Thanks

your welcome you can look at it your self have some one shift it while you look at the linkage and see if there is any different movement fro the drive the N and from the N to reverse like slippage or the shaft turning to far. but like I said most mechanics would look at it for free just to see if that might be the problem and if they wont look at it for free they are mean and rude. I hope you find the problem and I sure hope its not the trans.
