Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2005 Chevy Impala coolant temp light hot came on and temp gauge maxed.
Replaced thermostat, didn't fix, replaced water pump.  Seemed to fix until next
time I drove it.  Temp gauge maxed again.  Took to a garage they said system
had air pockets.  Had same issue driving home.  So long story short and after at
2nd garage and 2nd thermostat car is still not right.  When I start the car it
doesn't heat up but temp gauge steadily rises to overheat but engine is still
cold.  If I shut off the car and start again it hovers at the red line then slowly
lowers to mid level.  No heat unless I accelerate.  Replaced the coolant temp
sensor and drove the car and was fine.  2 hours later go to drive the car and
same issue no heat, temp gauge maxes out then lowers and still no heat until I
rev engine.  At a loss of what could be going on now.

Thanks Jim! I am taking it back to the garage. They did bleed the system after putting in new thermostat. Is there something that would keep causing air bubbles? We did bleed it before but didn't have it on an incline.

It is a 3.4. First testing showed no problem with head gasket. Today they did more testing and said a tiny head gasket leak. They told me car was good to go. I left the garage tonight car started to have heat then 2 miles lost heat and another mile hot coolant temp light and gauge maxed out. Turned car off and engine was warm not hot. Coolant reservoir was full and bubbling. I am so frustrated with this now. They obviously aren't driving the car because every time I do it loses heat and hot coolant temp light comes on and gauge goes all the way up. Thank you for trying to help me! Tammy
