2007 ram 1500 AC clutch not engaging, charging kit gage in the blue section indicating charge ok, was told that evaporater core is leaking and must be replaced!!!!!! IS this possible with gage indicat

I agree with your common sense approach. If the refrigerant charge is okay, the A/C clutch should kick on. But remember there are fuses and relays in that circuit that have to be working too. I don't understand how they figure a leaky evaporator keeps the clutch off. That's BS. If it's holding a charge pretty much, then there is no leak in the evaporator or anywhere else. It's "normal" for A/C systems to lose their charge over time. It doesn't always mean you have a failed part with a massive leak. Go to an A/C shop and get another opinion without telling them what you were told and see what they find. They make a leak detector device but it's pretty hard to reach the evaporator for testing. I think the first guys are full of BS. And that's not a college degree BS!
