Is it a manual gear box? If the answer is yes then you need to jack the car up and climb underneath. Look at where the gear lever comes through the floor. You'll see 3 metal rods going to the gear box and the likely hood is that 1 of them has come off at 1 end. Now, if this is the case it means you've lost the retaining clip so it'll be a trip to the dealers for a new one. The rod simply pushes through the hole in the fork and the clip slides onto the end to hold it in place.
