1994 ford f150 (manual) column problem

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My dad has a 94 f150 5 speed. Before you can
crank the truck, the clutch has to be in and you
have to pull the blinker lever towards you till it
clicks or it won't start. I'm assuming its a n anti
theft mechanism. Nobody has ever heard of this
that I have talked to, but I have driven the truck
myself and it is definitely there. Does anybody
know what it's called or know how to bypass it?

The jiggling of the turn signal lever would seem to indicate a loose or short wire within the column. There is a safety mechanism which prevents the engine from cranking if the clutch is not depressed. This was not present in older vehicles I have owned as the vehicle would lurch forward or backward if the key was turned without depressing the clutch. Search for a wiring diagram relative to the safety mechanism and you'll probably find the problem.
