what causes extreme gas fumes

my corvette seams to start and run fine, but has an extremely gassy smell to
the point it burns your eyes.

A gas leak. Don't start it until the leak is found and repaired. You are risking burning up your car.

It also might be running rich. How old is the gas? Clean or rebuild the carb recently?
