1999 Corolla doesn't turn over/doesn't click, but lights come on, help!

Asked by toadfrog2 Jul 13, 2017 at 11:34 PM about the 1999 Toyota Corolla

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1999 Corolla ran fine earlier today. Tonight, it would not start. Could not jump start it. Engine lights/headlights come on strong (will check battery tomorrow). From online searches, it may be starter or starter solenoid. Anyone have any suggestions? Can I fix this myself? Could I install a used starter/solenoid (if that is problem) or do I need a new one? Car is currently in grocery store parking lot. Thanks!!!

It does sound like a starter from initial information. Does the engine make any noise at all when trying to crank it up? Starters usually aren't too bad to change out but they can be tucked away bolted to the engine and there is a lot of current that goes to them so definitely disconnect the battery completely before you start messing with it.

Update: I went back today and the battery was dead. So, currently, the battery is charging overnight at a auto shop. I still thinks it's the starter. Pretty sure that no noises were made when I turned the key the previous night. Thanks!
