what would cause a two year old car bearings to go bad?

Asked by Afuert Feb 04, 2020 at 01:03 PM about the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek.  I just had it in for it's 36 thousand mile service.  A week later the rear tires were making a humming noise.  When I asked them what it was they said sometimes when they rotate the tires the treads can be the wrong direction.  The noise did not go away.  I just brought it in and they told me that both rear bearings had gone bad.  They first told me this it is from driving over potholes.  Then they told me it is from rust.  What can cause the bearings to go bad on a two year old Subaru?

Did the warranty cover the repair? If is is rust, make them show you the rust. This sounds bogus to me!

Thanks. Warranty will cover it. Im just worried if it was something they did during the 36000 service or if I have a defect.

WBs are covered 5yr/60k, and frequently wear out in the rear as they're undersized. The theory that they degrade due to static charge current drainage to ground is intriguing....
