How can I diagnose my coolant burning up on my 2006 Jeep laredo on my own?

Asked by Oct 19, 2016 at 07:27 PM about the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

One day steam is coming from the left side of my hood. Open the hood and
give it a look and found no coolant in the reservoir. After filling the coolant I
checked the oil which was also dangerously low. I have kept an eye on my
levels ever since and the jeep is definitely loosing coolant or using to much I
constantly have to check and refill. Please help.

If you're talking about the coolant reservoir, it's supposed to be at a certain level but not all the way full when cold, as it heats up, it takes coolant out of reservoir and when when you shut it off, it throws it back in reservoir. If you fill it to the top, after you run it, it's gonna overfill and throw it out on the ground and you may think is low again. But if it's empty, you have a leak somewhere and if not obvious where you see the puddle, might be a bad head gasket

This thing is bone dry when I check it. And its not cold here. It even starts burning oil when the coolant is gone.

So you can not tell where

So you can not tell where the coolent leak is coming from and how long will the reservoir stay full when you fill it to the full mark ?

yes, I have no idea where I'm loosing the coolant from but there is no signs of it leaking on the ground (puddles ETC.). It will go about 2 days without needing to be filled up.

I have used these products before when my vehicle was loosing coolent and they worked great. Bars or aluma seal cooling system stop leak you can add to reservoir but will take a couple of days to start to work or for faster results remove top hose going to radiator with engine cool and pour stop leak into hose then reconnect.

Is there a better way of diagnosing the issue? Sounds very helpful but also kinda sounds like putting a band aid on something, Im weary about pouring fix alls into my vehicle.

You can rent a tool from the parts store that will pressurize the cooling system and reveal the leak but FYI it has been 3 years since adding stop leak to my vehicle and to this very day no leaks.

OK. Might give it a try.
