what kind of mileage longevity can one expect?
thinking of buying a used 1989 Cadillac sls northstar with 166,000 miles on it.
what are typical life spans in mileage for these cars, or where can I find out about car longevity/ mileage in general.
thank you very much
....really ANY answer is acceptable...how you drive your car is the key to longevity...of course parts that will wear or chains that will stretch will still do so, but if we keep an eye, and maybe a mechanic's stethoscope on the timing case every 30,000 miles to see if the timing chain is stretched, as we can tell because the tensioner will have run out of tension...timing gets slightly retarded and it's time for a new chain and sprockets....hopefully you will give this consideration when assessing the situation~...of course a compression check dry and wet (if you've got the time) for comparative purposes to see if one cylinder is punchin' more than the others, etc.~...of course the dynamometer from the state smog inspection which will take your car through the paces to note any performance issues~ 0-60 times...amounts of C02, N0X, and H20 produced....of course NO CO if your catalytic converter works okay~
Northstar engines are notorious for head gasket trouble, and if they do blow a gasket then they usually wind up blowing the radiator or the heater core. So look it over carefully, it might be worth it to take the car to a shop that will do a "used car check" it can be money well spent.
thanks, i will do that. i guess i know enough that the toyota's and honda's I have had can get 250,000 miles before real problems start...my last accord made it well over 300,000... I have one brother in NYC and one brother in LA and don't like to fly. so there really are not reasonable expectations of longevity for the Cadillac? not asking for a crystal ball, just some idea of what others have found, or experienced. is there not a website for typical car longevity, or someone who knows about Cadillac s?
Just type in northstar engine problems in your search pane and take a look.
As tennisshoes said these engines are notorious for head gasket failure!! At 166,000 miles it's probably been done but if you don't know for sure look out! It's a $3,500.00+ repair to have it done correctly. Personally, I'd look at something else. HTH. -Jim
I thought the north star engine came later like in the mid 90s but if youlike the Cadillaclook for 1withthe 4.9 liter great engine
