did you allow the car to come to a stop 0 mph before switching into reverse? you may have put some pressures where they don't belong~

check your rear brake shoes ,sounds like their loose from the backing plate

Is it the front wheels or the rears? It's a brake shoe dragging if it's the rears. It could be something with the transmission if it's the front wheels.

I agree with your assessment 7jimmy7, m'boy, the brakes would simply ratchet to a dead stop, application of the brakes would free up the lock~

you wouldn't put a guy in there, jack it up have him or her punch the brake to witness the behavior in reverse?...that might help~

help to narrow it down, drum brakes are a little fussy and may misbehave, seen them ratchet all the way to one side because the machinist was careless with turning and put a screw thread on there by mistake...so yes if any work has been done on your drum brakes would be most suspicious~

spinning free is not like driving ,back up without touching brakes and prove if brake lock , still a handbrake dragging might cause, got to pull drums and inspect shoes at rear

looked at drums and done alot of work on cars and this has got me dont seem like brakes are the cause it roles a few feet and locks up car slams to a stop feels like you hit a wall

When you put your car in reverse and back up your brake shoes rotate back That way your brake adjuster adjust. You may need new new brake shoes they are wearing down that gives them to much play and wheel cylinder comes out to much make them hang up. be sure you put short end of shoe on back you replace
