Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente has power steering.  It has a leak at the
cylindrical device hanging on the accelerator bracket. It has a pipe from the
Power steering pump to the device. What is that device called ?

Also, thank you for your answer about the low fuel light a couple of weeks ago.

My 1968 parts catalog shows an idle speed up device under power steering for your Comet. Since the part is attached to the accelerator linkage I'm guessing that's what it is. When you turn the steering wheel enough to increase the pressure in the power steering system this device will increase engine speed so the engine won't stall under the added load of the power steering pump. Newer vehicles with a carburetor have an electric switch in the pressure power steering hose. This switch activates a solenoid at the carburetor to increase engine speed to achieve the same thing. Modern, fuel injected vehicles, also have a switch in the pressure power steering hose that will send a signal to the computer to increase engine speed to prevent stalling under the same steering situations. Hope that helps! Jim

That is interesting as I have have a lot of old cars (including other 60's Fords) and I have never seen anything like it.

Me either. My Sister had a '66 Comet and I don't recall seeing one on her's. Although that was many years ago. Jim
