Transmission question- 1976 Chevy Scottsdale

Asked by Getch67 Mar 27, 2018 at 11:00 AM about the 1976 Chevrolet El Camino

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I put the old truck in gear (gear Indicator floats on
steering column so it’s more of a feel type thing)
and it feels like it wants to move but doesn’t. This is
an truck that I’ve inherited and we are debating
whether to keep her or not. Any ideas what it could
be? I apologize about putting El Camino but they
didn’t have my make and year. I’ve included a
picture. Any help is welcomed.

If you haven't already check tranny fluid, low fluid level will keep it from shifting into gear. Then check linkages on shifter, make sure it is going into gear. After that may want to get it to an old-school mechanic to look over the tranny or torque converter. Lot of truck guys love these old mid-70s Chevy trucks, so it's got some value, if you do decide to sell it, a running, driving truck is going to fetch more than one that has to be towed, so it would be worth some effort to get it running again.
