chevy corsica starts but then dies

1993 Chevy Corsica 3.1 starts, then dies. give it gas and then all it does is sputter and back fires out the air breather. wont run . don't know what to do

Check air filter clean throttle body with throttle body cleaner spray also replace fuel filter if have not done so in a while. Add fuel injector cleaner to gas tank.

I agree, sounds like a fuel system problem. Usually when an engine backfires out the throttle body it's an overly lean (not enough fuel) air/fuel mixture. Also check for damaged or disconnected vacuum lines. That can cause this condition as well. HTH. -Jim
