With the popular Corolla-based Matrix, Toyota has pioneered a new automotive niche called the "CUV" (crossover utility vehicle). The Matrix is compact yet functional. Weighing just 2600 pounds and measuring 171 inches long, the unique body shape offers the additional cargo space and foldaway seat options found in many small sport utilities. The Matrix competes with the PT Cruiser and Mazda 3.
The engine is a 1.8 liter inline four, which makes 126 horsepower and 122 pound-feet of torque. This VVT-i power plant may be paired with either a four speed automatic or five speed manual transmission. Performance is not as sporty as many buyers might hope, but the manual transmission gas mileage of 30/36 mpg is certainly a strong selling point. The automatic transmission Matrix has an EPA rating of 29/34 mpg.
The base model comes equipped with a CD player and air conditioning. Most convenience options are packaged together, but larger wheels, ABS, and cruise control are all offered. Full power accessory (plus keyless entry) and All-Weather options packages are also available.

The Toyota Matrix is carried over from the previous model year, and the lineup has seen little change since its 2003 introduction. The Matrix wagons are very similar to the Pontiac Vibe, both being products of a joint venture between Toyota and GM, and both are directed to a younger market.
The XR is the mid-level Matrix trim, adding items like keyless entry, power windows and locks, and a rear wiper to the list of standard features. More optional equipment is offered with the XR. Add-ons include a premium JBL audio system, moon roof, and 17 inch wheels.
All XRs are powered by a 1.8 liter DOHC inline four engine, which generates 126 horsepower and 122 pound-feet of torque. The 2600 pound wagon has a very strong EPA rating of 30/36 mpg when equipped with the 5-speed manual transmission. Estimates for the automatic are 29/34 mpg.

The increasingly popular Matrix hatchback enters its fourth year of production without any revisions, but the AWD models would be discontinued after this year. The Matrix blends the cargo carrying and interior flexibility of a small SUV with the operating convenience of a compact sedan. The availability of AWD complemented the Matrix's functional qualities very nicely. In 2006, there are five variations available.
The AWD models are only available with a four speed automatic transmission, mated to the same 1.8 liter DOHC inline four engine. This power plant provides 126 horsepower and 122 pound-feet of torque. Drivers can expect 26/31 mpg gas mileage when riding atop the AWD drive train.
Standard equipment on the base trim includes a CD player and air conditioning. Most convenience options are grouped together. A popular add-on is the power package, which adds power windows, power locks, and keyless entry.

The availability of AWD was discontinued after 2006 on both Matrix trims. This year brought no significant changes for Toyota's uniquely styled compact wagon, but its popularity continues to grow.
The compact wagon serves many of the same functions of a small SUV, with abundance of cargo space and configurable seating. Despite its apparent stoutness, the Matrix can haul items up to eight feet in length.
The Matrix houses a 1.8 liter DOHC inline four engine, which generates 126 horsepower and 122 pound-feet of torque. The AWD version of the XR is only available with a four-speed automatic transmission.
The XR trim brings some additional standard features, including keyless entry, power accessories, and a rear wiper. More options are available with this upper level trim: a premium JBL audio system, moon roof, and 17 inch wheels may all be added. ABS with Toyota's Electronic Brake-force Distribution is a standard safety item on the XR.

Toyota would not offer the XRS trim on the popular Matrix wagon after the 2006 model year. The lineup is unchanged for 2006, with five distinct models available.
The XRS is set apart from other Matrix models by a series of performance enhancements. The same 1.8 liter VVT-i inline four engine is used here, but it has been tweaked for a considerably higher power output. This 164 horsepower version is paired with a six speed manual as the only transmission. Four wheel disc brakes have also been added. Gas mileage is a bit lower for this more powerful engine, at 25/32 mpg.
The Matrix XRS is similarly equipped to the XR. Standard features include air conditioning, a CD audio system, keyless entry, power windows and locks, and a rear wiper. A DVD navigation system is optional. The sporty XRS is the only Matrix model not offered with all-wheel drive.
