Reviews SummaryThe RAV4 was last revised for 2019, and Toyota takes the if-it-ain’t-broke approach for the new model year, retaining the well-reviewed styling while updating the frequently maligned infotainment system of yesteryear. This review focuses on the gas-powered RAV4. The RAV4 Hybrid and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) RAV4 Prime are each covered separately.
Reviews SummaryPorsche is synonymous with performance. From the automaker’s inception and first production model, the 1948 Porsche 356, it has built vehicles that are fun to drive and engineered with German precision and excellence. Well, mostly. There have been some duds along the way. But that doesn’t apply to the Macan, a compact SUV that is Porsche’s best-selling model. As it should, the 2022 Porsche Macan drives more like a sports car than a sport/utility, and it receives several updates to keep it fresh as Porsche prepares an electric replacement for the popular SUV.

Back in 2022, the Porsche Macan flaunted its distinct athletic styling. Originating in 2015, the Macan remained nearly identical to the original, despite multiple updates. The 2022 Macan received yet another refresh, featuring larger standard wheels, seven new wheel designs, and a newly designed center console with haptic touch controls. Every version of the 2022 Macan had enhanced power and more standard equipment than before. The lineup included the base Macan, Macan S, and Macan GTS models, the latter now hosting the high-output powertrain from the former Macan Turbo.
Our evaluation featured the Macan S, priced at an as-tested MSRP of $87,670, including nearly $20,000 worth of extras. The car looked striking in Volcano Gray paint and 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels, showing off its volcano-like charisma. Inside, it exuded a sporty yet luxurious feel with its red leather, gloss black trim, and silver metallic accents, drawing inspiration from other Porsche vehicles by placing the ignition switch to the left of the steering wheel.
For 2023, the Toyota RAV4 continued to offer diverse trim levels, spanning from the budget-friendly LE to the plush Limited edition. The Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims remained distinguished by their striking two-part front ends. Our test model was the Adventure trim, which boasted a more aggressive grille, darkened wheels, and orange interior accents. Despite its rugged look—enhanced by black cladding and faux skid plates—the Adventure trim was more stylish than functional off-road.
The RAV4 Adventure added a few premium flourishes like frameless rearview mirrors but retained a mostly utilitarian cabin compared to the more upscale rivals. The seating finished with orange stitching added a unique touch, while the interior storage was robust with practical shelf spaces and door pockets. However, drivers seeking a more polished experience often looked towards the Toyota Venza, which delivered a smoother, car-like handling.

The 2022 Porsche Macan offered a spectrum of powerful engines across its models. The base variant featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 261 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. For thrill-seekers, the Macan GTS, equipped with a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 inherited from the old Macan Turbo, packed an impressive 434 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. The Macan S, which we evaluated, sported the same twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 as last year’s GTS, tuned to 375 hp and 383 lb-ft, enabling it to sprint to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package.
All Macans featured a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission and a flexible AWD system primed to transfer power to the rear wheels. With updated steering and suspension for 2022, including standard 20-inch wheels and Porsche Active Suspension Management on Macan S, the driving experience was nothing short of exhilarating. Despite its braking system's initially firm pedal feel, the Macan S performed admirably on sinuous roads, delivering grip and stability that made for an engaging drive. However, this fuel efficiency came at a cost, as our test car averaged 18.1 mpg, close enough to the 19 mpg EPA rating.
Compared to the spirited Macan, the 2023 RAV4 offered a more utilitarian kind of performance. It was powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While this setup outperformed CVTs found in competitors like the Honda CR-V, it lagged behind in terms of pure acceleration. AWD was standard on off-road-focused Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims, providing better handling in various conditions, unlike the base FWD configuration. The Adventure variant tested was more visually rugged but less capable off-road than the TRD Off-Road, which featured specialized suspension and Falken All-Terrain tires.
The 2022 Porsche Macan balanced sportiness with comfort in its front seats. Our test car came with 14-way power-adjustable, heated, and ventilated front seats, although the optional Adaptive Sports Seats Plus would have enhanced the driving experience. Rear seats, however, were cramped, especially for taller passengers. Entry and exit from the rear were unexpectedly easy, but overall, it seemed suitable for shorter trips. The updated center console was sleek and tech-savvy, though its haptic touch controls required the driver’s attention, a drawback alongside the intrusive daytime glare.
In terms of cargo space, the Macan provided 17.2 cubic feet behind the back seat, extendable to 53 cubic feet with seats folded. Nevertheless, it trailed behind in storage options, offering minimal places for small items like smartphones.
In contrast, the 2023 RAV4 featured expansive driver and passenger accommodations. The front row, equipped with 37.7 inches of headroom and 41 inches of legroom, provided a spacious environment, slightly narrowing when equipped with a moonroof. The second row offered 39.5 inches of headroom and 37.8 inches of legroom, making it marginally more comfortable for rear passengers than the Macan.
The RAV4’s practicality extended to its storage, with numerous front-row bins and pockets. The cargo space was notably more generous, offering 37.5 cubic feet behind the second row and expanding to 69.8 cubic feet with seats folded. These figures positioned the RAV4 ahead of the Porsche in terms of usable storage, catering better to families and those requiring ample cargo room.
In 2022, the Porsche Macan showcased its high-tech Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with a 10.9-inch touchscreen. This system integrated features like wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM, navigation, and connected services, alongside an optional WiFi hotspot. The standard 10-speaker sound system could be upgraded to either a Bose premium or Burmester high-end audio setup. The touchscreen came with touch-sensing virtual buttons and proximity sensing, aiding navigation via intuitive smartphone-like icons, albeit with some perplexing icons. Voice recognition lagged behind competitors, and notably, the system lacked Android Auto.
The 2023 Toyota RAV4, on the other hand, introduced an overhauled infotainment system. Standard features included an 8.0-inch touchscreen, with the Limited and TRD Off-Road trims boasting a 10.5-inch screen. Voice command, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity were now standard. Our Adventure trim test vehicle came with the upgraded multimedia system, including an 11-speaker JBL Premium audio system. A 7-inch driver-information display was standard, with options for a 12.3-inch version in higher trims, enhancing driver engagement.
For 2022, the Porsche Macan came equipped with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and a reversing camera. Additional safety features, such as blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist, were optional. The blind-spot monitor in our test car, part of the Premium Package, performed adequately. Parking assistance features, including front and rear sensors and a surround-view camera, added convenience. Despite its popularity, the Macan hadn't been rated by NHTSA or IIHS.
In 2023, the Toyota RAV4 included a comprehensive safety suite as standard. Features like lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam LED headlights, pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control were part of the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 package. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert became standard from the XLE trim onward. The RAV4 performed well in IIHS evaluations, achieving a Top Safety Pick+ award for 2023—an improvement from the previous year’s Top Safety Pick recognition.
