The 2024 Jeep Compass, tested in Michigan, presented a rather unremarkable exterior, especially in its Sport trim. The model we evaluated was a white Compass with black plastic door handles and small wheels, resembling a utility vehicle more than a stylish SUV. Its design was generic, with features like the seven-slot grille being the only distinct Jeep identifiers. The interior, however, was a different story. The Compass boasted a well-designed cabin with supportive cloth seats, a large 10-inch infotainment screen, and a cohesive style that was a significant improvement over older models. Despite its interior strengths, the exterior lacked the unique appeal expected from a Jeep.

In contrast, the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class retained its iconic boxy design, a nod to its heritage dating back to 1979. While subtle styling updates were made, the G-Class maintained its traditional features, such as the flat hood and prominent corner lights. The vehicle's character was further emphasized by its robust doors and latches, which produced a distinctive clacking noise. The G-Class also featured functional changes, including a repositioned rearview camera and new wheel options. Inside, the G-Class offered a luxurious experience with a sci-fi-inspired cabin, complete with large round vents and ambient lighting. The AMG models added sporty elements, enhancing the overall driving experience.

The 2024 Jeep Compass was equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine, delivering 200 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, the Compass provided a smooth driving experience, with minimized engine noise. It featured three driving modes and a rear-axle disconnect for fuel efficiency. However, its steering and handling were less impressive, with too much play off-center and low grip. The Compass Trailhawk offered additional off-road capabilities, but at a higher cost. Fuel economy was estimated at 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class offered a choice between the G 550 and AMG G 63 models, with the former featuring a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. The AMG G 63 retained its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, delivering 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. Both models included a mild-hybrid system and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The G 550 accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, while the G 63 achieved it in 4.2 seconds. The AMG model also featured an advanced suspension system, enhancing both off-road and on-road performance. Despite its truck-like feel, the G-Class provided a comfortable ride with low wind and tire noise.

The 2024 Jeep Compass excelled in utility and ease of use, with clear analog gauges and a large color display. It offered ample headroom and legroom, especially without a sunroof, and included rear vents, USB ports, and a fold-down center armrest. Cargo space was competitive, with 27.2 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 59.8 cubic feet when folded. The front passenger seat also folded, allowing for easy transport of longer items.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, while not as spacious as some luxury SUVs, provided a tall passenger compartment with plenty of headroom. Its driving position was upright, reflecting its utilitarian origins. Cargo space was limited, with 22.6 cubic feet available with the rear seats in place. The G-Class had a maximum towing capacity of 7,716 pounds, slightly less than some competitors. Despite its size, the G-Class offered good visibility and was easier to park than larger rivals.
