2023 Jeep Compass vs 2024 Nissan Rogue

The 2023 Jeep Compass reflected a refined, upscale design ethos more akin to its larger Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Wagoneer siblings than the rugged utility typically associated with Jeep. The Compass sported fresh 17-inch wheels on the Sport and Latitude models, gloss black wheels on the Trailhawk, and offered Red editions in multiple colors. Trim levels spanned from the base Sport to the off-road-capable Trailhawk and luxury-oriented Limited editions. Our Limited test model, with Granite Crystal paint and 19-inch wheels, looked and felt upscale, mimicking a scaled-down Grand Cherokee. The interior was sophisticated, featuring two-tone black and gray themes with caramel accents that avoided the cheap feel, marred only slightly by its high as-tested price of $45,800.

For the 2024 Nissan Rogue, it marked the first significant styling update since its 2021 release. The Rogue maintained trim levels from S to Platinum but updated its look with a larger grille and redesigned inner taillight elements. It introduced 18-inch wheels for the Rogue SV, 19-inch machined-finish wheels for the Platinum trim, and increased black exterior trim on the Platinum. The interior saw updates as well, including new materials across surfaces in the SV trim and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen for higher trims.

Under the hood, the 2023 Jeep Compass finally received a powertrain upgrade. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivered 200 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque across a broad rev range. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Jeep Active Drive AWD system, the Compass offered improved drivability. The Trailhawk trim featured enhanced off-road capabilities with a low-range AWD system, rock mode, and hill descent control. On roads, the Compass felt more powerful and quieter than its predecessors; however, it still didn't match larger compact crossovers in terms of performance.

Conversely, the 2024 Nissan Rogue came with a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder VC-Turbo engine, producing 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. This engine enabled the Rogue to surpass many competitors in power. However, the CVT transmission lagged in responsiveness, detracting from the engine's capabilities. The Rogue's firmer suspension compromised ride quality without enhancing handling, though it managed to maintain a quiet cabin, which was a notable advantage.

The 2023 Jeep Compass provided adequate interior space for adults in both rows, thanks to its narrow but roomy design. Cloth upholstery was standard on lower trims, with leather available on higher trims. Our Limited test car boasted a comfortable, upscale interior with various power-adjustable and heated seats. The Compass offered 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, expandable to 59.8 cubic feet with the seats folded down, providing functional flexibility.

In comparison, the 2024 Nissan Rogue maximized interior space similarly to its competitors, with near-identical legroom and shoulder room. The Rogue slightly outperformed the Compass in cargo capacity, offering 36.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and up to 74.1 cubic feet with them folded down. Additional features like the Divide-N-Hide system and a lower floor configuration added to its practicality. The Rogue also featured a power and motion-activated liftgate, enhancing convenience.

The 2023 Jeep Compass came equipped with a 10.1-inch touchscreen featuring Uconnect 5 technology, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and over-the-air updates. Options included a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, embedded navigation, Alpine premium audio, and Alexa Built-in for voice control. Our Limited test model showcased all these features and they worked effectively, despite the occasional bass-heavy audio setting.

The 2024 Nissan Rogue featured different infotainment setups based on trim levels. Lower trims had an 8-inch touchscreen, while SL and Platinum trims sported a new 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Rogue introduced Google built-in software for integrating Google Maps and other apps directly with the vehicle system, a segment-first feature. It also provided multiple USB ports, including fast-charging options, and an extended free trial for Nissan Connect Services, enhancing overall connectivity.

For the 2023 Compass, Jeep added drowsy driver detection and a rear-seat reminder system. Standard ADAS included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Higher trims offered adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and Highway Assist for semi-autonomous driving. Our test showed Highway Assist worked well but was limited by certain road conditions.

The 2024 Rogue earned good safety ratings from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA. Standard driver assists included emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning. Higher trims featured ProPilot Assist, combining adaptive cruise control with lane-centering for better highway driving assistance. This system was more advanced than many rivals, even if not leading-edge technology.
