Reviews SummaryAt this point, Kia’s story is less one of an ugly duckling turning into a beautiful swan, and more one of an underappreciated boxer who begins raining haymakers as soon as they’re put into the ring. After impressive debuts by the big Telluride and the just-right Sorento, the smaller 2023 Kia Sportage proves that the once-unloved Korean automaker can make a compelling car for every shopper. Compact-crossover shoppers whose default choices have always been Toyota, Honda, and Nissan can now add Kia to their list of worthy brands.
Reviews SummaryThe all-new, third-generation X1 is zippy and fun enough to be worthy of the distinction, but with new capability and plenty of cargo space, it’s bringing the utility, too.

The 2023 Kia Sportage received a major design overhaul that attracted plenty of attention. Over its previous four generations, its styling shifted dramatically, ranging from quirky designs to more conventional looks. The latest model delivered a fresh, almost French, aesthetic. Many believed that if it had a Renault, Peugeot, or Citroen badge instead of Kia’s, it would seamlessly fit into a lineup from any of those brands. This wasn't seen as a negative; on the contrary, the new Sportage looked exciting and eager to stand out.
Notable in the Sportage’s design were its bright boomerang-shaped daytime running lights, which framed a distinctive grille, and the textured metal trim on the D Pillar that added an upscale touch. For 2023, Kia offered the Sportage in seven trims: LX, EX, SX, SX Prestige, X-Line, X-Pro, and X-Pro Prestige. The interior saw a shift away from leather upholstery towards more durable and animal-friendly synthetic leather, although the base LX trim still featured cloth seats. While synthetic leather proved long-lasting, it lacked some of the luxurious feel of genuine leather.
Visibility from the driver’s seat was excellent, thanks to a large front windshield and low beltline. Higher trims featured an impressive expanse of display screens, though elsewhere in the cabin, there were standard compact-crossover materials like hard-wearing plastic and fingerprint-prone piano-black plastic. Dual-zone full automatic climate control was standard from the EX trim and above, although the touch-sensitive HVAC controls had a dual-functionality quirk that many found frustrating.
In contrast, the 2023 BMW X1 exhibited an evolutionary rather than revolutionary design approach. It looked more refined, with a larger, squarer kidney grille. The new flush door handles and standard LED headlights and taillights contributed to its premium appearance. The X1’s exterior color palette expanded significantly, offering 13 choices, including five new and vibrant options. Our tester was finished in Portimao Blue, a striking extra-cost option.
Inside, the X1's cabin felt premium, if not overly luxurious. A single sweeping pane—the BMW Curved Display—dominated the dashboard. The SensaTec 2.0 seat coverings, available in multiple colors, provided a comfortable experience. Our X1 tester came with the M Sport Package, which included bolstered sport seats and more dynamic interior elements, like a stitched SensaTec dashboard and an M leather steering wheel. The panoramic moonroof from the Premium Package extended far forward, creating an airy feel. Sophisticated touches like the slim floating center armrest and aluminum-finished door handles enhanced the interior experience.

The gas-powered 2023 Kia Sportage featured a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. This engine, which was a bit more powerful and fuel-efficient than the outgoing model’s 2.4-liter engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, this powertrain was not particularly quick compared to turbocharged competitors. Front-wheel drive (FWD) came standard, with all-wheel drive (AWD) available as an option. The 2023 Sportage offered fuel economy figures of 25/32/28 mpg (city/highway/combined) for FWD and 23/28/25 mpg for AWD models.
Kia also introduced the X-Line and X-Pro trims for those seeking rugged aesthetics or off-road capabilities. The X-Line featured 19-inch alloy wheels and black exterior trim, while the X-Pro added genuine off-road features like BF Goodrich all-terrain tires and specific drive modes tuned for different terrains. Off-road, the Sportage handled well, boasting 8.3 inches of ground clearance. However, the off-road enhancements negatively impacted on-road performance, resulting in heavy cornering lean, road noise, and a need for the engine to work harder.
Meanwhile, the 2023 BMW X1 saw a significant performance improvement. Its 2.0-liter twin-turbo four-cylinder engine, featuring a new dual injection system and revised combustion chamber geometry, generated 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. These figures allowed the X1 to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds and tow up to 3,500 pounds—making it the first X1 rated for towing.
The X1’s new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) replaced the previous eight-speed automatic and provided a smooth and engaging driving experience, especially with the paddle shifters from the M Sport Package. The upgraded Adaptive M Suspension and damping systems offered enhanced comfort and stability with minimal body roll and a ride that felt more like a smaller, agile hatchback than a crossover.
The 2023 X1 achieved an EPA-rated fuel economy of 25/34/28 mpg (city/highway/combined), with Premium fuel recommended for optimal performance.
As a compact crossover, the 2023 Kia Sportage's larger dimensions benefited its interior space. The new model was 7.1 inches longer with a 3.4-inch longer wheelbase than its predecessor. This extra size translated to superior interior room and cargo capacity, with the rear seats offering an impressive 41.3 inches of legroom. The trunk could hold 39.6 cubic feet of cargo, expanding to 74.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.
The front seats provided ample storage, featuring a typical cubby ahead of the shifter, tandem cupholders, and a spacious center console bin. However, the tech controls, especially the HVAC system’s touch-sensitive buttons, proved to be overcomplicated and distracting.
On the other hand, the 2023 BMW X1’s larger dimensions resulted in a more spacious cabin. It offered impressive front-row headroom of 42.1 inches and 39.3 inches in the rear, surpassing competitors like the Audi Q3 and Lexus UX. Front-row legroom stood at 40.4 inches, while the rear offered 37 inches, slightly less than some rivals. The X1’s cargo space measured 25.7 cubic feet behind the seats and 57.2 cubic feet with them folded, outdoing its premium competition.
The 2023 X1 featured optional heated seats and a heated steering wheel, a feature that felt somewhat standard for the brand but appreciated that it wasn’t bundled with a costly package. The wireless charging pad, a part of the Premium Package, securely held the phone even during spirited driving, which proved to be a practical advantage.
The 2023 Kia Sportage showcased impressive technology features. The top trims boasted a 12.3-inch touchscreen interface paired with an equally large driver information display. However, the vehicle’s most advanced Android Auto and Apple CarPlay were wired, while the base LX trim’s 8-inch screen offered these features wirelessly. Icons on the screen shared similar designs, making it difficult to navigate without looking away from the road.
Higher trims included wireless charging, rear USB-C charging ports, navigation, Sirius XM Satellite Radio, HD Radio, and a Harman Kardon stereo system on selected trims. Overall, the Sportage provided an excellent tech package, especially considering its price point.
The 2023 BMW X1 featured the advanced BMW Curved Display integrating both the 10.7-inch infotainment screen and the 10.25-inch driver information display. The system, running on iDrive 8, was responsive and easy to use, despite being cluttered with many apps and sub-menus. Voice commands worked effectively for climate control and opening the panoramic moonroof, but the navigation required specific inputs. The touchscreen functioned smoothly, and the integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto was seamless.
The Live Cockpit Plus was standard, while Live Cockpit Professional, part of the Premium Package, added a full-color head-up display and augmented reality navigation. The X1 featured four USB-C ports and an optional 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. The vehicle used a new toggle-style gear selector and included buttons for various functions right on the center console, which streamlined the interior's appearance.
The 2023 Kia Sportage provided comprehensive collision-avoidance tech and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) as standard. These included automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, lane-departure warning, and rear backup sensors. Higher trims added blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit warning, and adaptive cruise control. Top trims featured blind-view monitors and Highway Driving Assist, although these were not widely available across all trims.
The 2023 BMW X1 included active blind-spot detection with an exit warning function as standard. The front-collision warning system offered pedestrian- and cyclist detection with brake intervention. Optional features through the Active Driving Assistant Professional included speed limit assist, extended traffic-jam assistant, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control with stop & go. A 360-degree camera system was available in the Premium Package, and Active Park Distance Control used front and rear sensors to avoid collisions.
