Reviews SummaryGiven the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But luxury SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action. Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review). Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe. To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating New York City streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.
Reviews SummaryWith the new 2023 CX-50, Mazda doubles down on the immensely popular compact crossover SUV segment. For now, the CX-50 complements rather than replaces the existing CX-5 model, and it targets active lifestyle adventure seekers instead of the sophisticated urbanites typically drawn to the CX-5. The 2023 Mazda CX-50 shares powertrains and underlying technology with the CX-5, but it's otherwise different, offering slightly more rear-seat room and practical cargo space in a longer, lower, and wider design. Given Mazda’s future SUV product plans calling for new CX-70 and CX-90 models, we expect the CX-50 will ultimately replace the CX-5.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer exuded a classic SUV aesthetic, sharing its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, which lent it a traditional look characterized by a tall hood, broad shoulders, and trapezoidal wheel arches. The Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a standard black roof, a unique hood, front fascia, and a grille that leaned forward slightly, featuring laser-etched knurling. The vehicle's design was further enhanced by 20-inch standard wheels, with an option for 22-inch wheels, and acrylic glass-covered wheel center caps. Inside, the Grand Wagoneer offered a luxurious experience with high-end materials, 24-way power front seats, and Nappa leather upholstery, setting it apart from the standard Wagoneer.
The 2023 Mazda CX-50, on the other hand, showcased a blend of elegance and ruggedness. Its styling was marked by a blunt nose, long hood, and rakish windshield, with a cabin positioned toward the rear wheels. The CX-50's rugged appeal was emphasized by blistered fender swells, lower body cladding, and faux skid plates. The vehicle's design was complemented by a standard black grille, mirror caps, and available 20-inch wheels. The interior of the CX-50 was driver-focused, featuring quality materials, polished metallic trim, and a mix of analog and digital gauges. The CX-50's interior was both stylish and functional, with a focus on comfort and practicality.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a robust 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine, delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, allowed the Grand Wagoneer to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in six seconds, despite its hefty 6,400-pound weight. The vehicle came standard with a Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system, featuring a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential. The Grand Wagoneer also boasted a Quadra-Lift air suspension system, providing up to 10 inches of ground clearance and the ability to ford up to 24 inches of water. However, its size and weight made it less agile, with a bouncy ride at higher speeds and imprecise steering.
In contrast, the 2023 Mazda CX-50 offered two engine options: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, and a turbocharged version producing up to 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. The turbo engine provided smooth acceleration and a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The CX-50 featured a six-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, with drive modes including Normal, Sport, Off-Road, and Towing. The CX-50's ride quality was firm yet comfortable, with a hint of torque steer during tight turns. Its driving character was likened to a modern Mazda6 station wagon, offering a car-like feel despite its SUV stature.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer offered seating for seven with standard second-row captain’s chairs, or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It provided ample third-row headroom and second-row legroom, surpassing competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. However, front-row space was more limited compared to its rivals. The Grand Wagoneer boasted 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place, expanding to 94.2 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. It had a maximum towing capacity of 9,850 pounds and came with standard features like a sunroof and four-zone automatic climate control.
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 featured a comfortable interior with power-adjustable heated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. The front seats were comfortable for long drives, though they could benefit from more side bolstering. The back seat was spacious, with rear air vents and charging ports. The CX-50 offered 31.4 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 56.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. While storage space was adequate, some opportunities for additional storage were missed. The CX-50's power rear liftgate and long load floor added to its practicality.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a comprehensive infotainment system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. It included a McIntosh audio system, simultaneous Bluetooth pairing, and a 4G-LTE WiFi hotspot. Second-row passengers had access to a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system added two 10.1-inch screens. The Grand Wagoneer used the Uconnect 5 system, which offered over-the-air updates but was noted for its slow response and plain graphics.
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 came equipped with the Mazda Connect infotainment system, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mazda Connected Services. The base model had an 8.8-inch display, while higher trims included a 10.25-inch display. Mazda Connect historically lacked touchscreen control, but the CX-50 allowed touchscreen use for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The available 12-speaker Bose Centerpoint surround-sound system provided a satisfying audio experience. The CX-50 also offered an Active Driving Display, projecting data within the driver's line of sight.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer had not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA at the time of review. It came with standard safety features like a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included a driver-attention monitor, night vision, and traffic-sign recognition. The Grand Wagoneer also offered Active Driving Assist, combining adaptive cruise control with lane centering.
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 was expected to perform well in safety tests, similar to other Mazda models. It offered a comprehensive package of driving assistance systems, with exclusive features on the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus trim. These included Traffic Jam Assist, active blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system. The CX-50's systems generally worked well, though the adaptive cruise control occasionally failed to recognize slower vehicles cutting in.
