Reviews SummaryAutomakers have traditionally had a hard time making money on entry-level subcompact cars, because they have low profit margins, but America has largely moved away from cars to crossover SUVs—and higher prices. That allows car companies to offer an entry-level subcompact SUV for thousands more than a similar sedan or hatchback. Such is the case with the Hyundai Venue, which costs more than its predecessor, the subcompact Accent that was dropped after the 2022 model year. While the price is higher, the advantage for buyers is a vehicle that generally has more cargo space and is more practical. We recently drove the 2026 Hyundai Venue SEL w/2-Tone Roof (yes, that’s the trim level name) to find out if a subcompact crossover is a better buy than a cheaper subcompact car. Verdict: The Hyundai Venue sacrifices refinement for a price point that isn’t as low as a comparable subcompact car. We’d be tempted to spend a little more for a slightly larger compact car with more power, features, and refinement.
Reviews SummaryUnless buyers want a luxury model, the herd of midsize two-row crossovers is thinning as buyers gravitate to three-rows. Like the Mazda CX-70 and the Honda Passport, the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is a two-row version of a more popular three-row crossover, but its lowered roof and unique tail make it feel like a distinctive, standalone model akin to the Nissan Murano or the Chevrolet Blazer. Last refreshed for the 2024 model year, the Atlas Cross Sport is essentially unchanged for 2026, ahead of the arrival of a redesigned model for 2027. For this review, we grabbed a lower-level front-wheel drive (FWD) SE with Technology model to experience the value equation of this Volkswagen at a palatable price. Verdict: The Atlas Cross Sport is a great value and well made, even if it's not enjoyable to drive.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport presented a bold and robust appearance, characterized by its high-sided, slabby body panels, large wheels, and oversized fenders. Its front fascia, reminiscent of a pickup truck, featured a wide, dark grille with a honeycomb texture, chrome trim, and sleek, stacked headlights. The light bar with the illuminated VW logo added a flashy touch. The vehicle's design was simple yet effective, with a wide front end, thick U-shaped fenders, and 20-inch two-tone wheels. The rear lighting, though a bit busy, maintained a crisp and clean look. However, the thick chrome bar below the taillight strip and chrome bumper trim pieces seemed to age the vehicle slightly. The interior was smartly designed with high-quality materials, featuring a single touchscreen, double-stacked air vents, and an upscale look for the seats with diamond-contrast stitch inserts. The Dark Beige and Black upholstery added to the luxurious feel, making it one of the most expensive-looking interiors in its class.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue, on the other hand, was classified as a crossover SUV but resembled a tall hatchback. Its design leaned more towards a crossover, with a small and narrow appearance, an upright windshield, and SUV cues like a bluff nose and standard roof rails. The high nose was complemented by lower headlights and high-set daytime running lights. The Venue's sides were defined by roof rails and black rocker panels, with black wheel flares around small wheels. Inside, the Venue offered a simple and functional look, with a digital instrument cluster and a small touchscreen that resembled an iPad tacked onto the dash. The interior featured body-color trim around the air vents and shifter, adding a touch of the exterior design to the inside.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport was equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine, delivering 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard on the SE and SE with Technology trims, while all-wheel drive was optional on these trims and standard on the SEL, SEL R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line. The fuel economy was rated at 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined with FWD, and slightly lower with AWD. Despite its power, the engine struggled at highway speeds, especially when loaded with passengers and luggage. The steering was light and lifeless, and the ride was rough, though the transmission shifted smoothly and braking was solid.
In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Venue was powered by a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, producing only 121 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque. The power was channeled through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to the front wheels. The Venue's performance was modest, with a 0-60 mph time of 8.5–8.8 seconds, aided by its lightweight of 2,738 pounds. While peppy in city traffic, the Venue struggled at highway speeds, with the transmission slow to downshift for more power. The handling benefited from its small size and low weight, making it easy to maneuver in traffic and fit into tight parking spots. However, the ride was jiggly on broken pavement due to the solid rear axle.
The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport offered generous headroom and legroom, making it a suitable choice for those seeking a midsize crossover. The back seat was spacious and supportive, with good sightlines despite the smaller rear windows. The infotainment interface was user-friendly, though the lack of manual climate controls was a drawback. Heated and ventilated front seats were standard, with additional features available on higher trims. The vehicle boasted a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds and ample cargo space, with 40.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 77.6 cubic feet with the seats folded.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue, meanwhile, featured cloth and H-Tex seats with manual adjustments, providing decent comfort. Headroom was ample, but legroom was limited for taller occupants. The rear seat could accommodate two adults comfortably, but three would be a tight fit. The rear seats folded flat to offer 31.9 cubic feet of cargo space, though this was modest compared to other crossovers. The Venue's interior was dominated by hard black plastic, with limited soft-touch surfaces, reflecting its budget-friendly nature.
The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport came with a 12-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, the lack of navigation on lower trims was a disappointment. The vehicle featured adaptive front headlights, illuminated VW emblems, a hands-free power tailgate, and remote start. The climate controls were integrated into the touchscreen, offering presets for convenience. The proximity key worked at all four doors, and there were multiple USB-C ports and a wireless charging pad.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue was equipped with a simple 8-inch touchscreen for basic infotainment functions. While it lacked features like navigation and a Wi-Fi hotspot, it did offer wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The audio system was a basic six-speaker unit, with no premium option available. The digital instrument cluster displayed limited information and was not programmable.
The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport received a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with a five-star side-impact rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named it a 2026 Top Safety Pick. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot monitors, and adaptive cruise control. The vehicle also featured automatic post-collision braking and the Intelligent Crash Response System.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue offered a good set of standard safety features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. However, it lacked adaptive cruise control. The Venue received a four-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with mixed ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The driver attention monitor was overly sensitive during testing.
