Reviews Summary

A redesigned 2023 Honda CR-V is on sale, improving on the successful formula the automaker has used for more than 25 years. The 2023 CR-V remains one of the roomiest compact crossover SUVs in its class, and it get an overdue infusion of new infotainment systems and safety features that bring it up to par with its many rivals. In addition, with the 2023 CR-V, Honda places greater emphasis on electrification with a next-generation hybrid powertrain that comes standard in half the lineup. However, in this review, we’ll focus on the 2023 Honda CR-V EX and EX-L trims with the standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine instead of the Honda CR-V Hybrid models.

Reviews Summary

The Trax was launched for the 2015 model year as a no-frills subcompact crossover, designed to serve as basic transportation at an affordable cost. However, the Trax moldered in showrooms without any significant updates until the 2022 model year—when it was discontinued altogether.

But now the Trax is back in totally revamped, second-generation form. It's as big of a reimagining as you'll likely ever see in a car like this. The new Trax is bigger than before, more effort has been put into its styling, and Chevy has added the tech features that have become the norm since the original Trax was launched. Still the entry-level model in Chevy's lineup, the Trax sits below the Chevy Trailblazer, and takes aim at the Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks, but it was also designed to retain owners of discontinued small cars like the Chevy Cruze, Sonic, and Spark, bridging the gap between car and crossover.

The redesigned 2024 Trax launches in LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ trim levels. We sampled 2RS and Activ models on roads around Asheville, North Carolina.

2023 Honda CR-V

7/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

7/10
The 2023 Honda CR-V arrived with a significant redesign, refining the formula that has made it a success over its past 25 years. Known for its spacious interior among compact crossovers, the 2023 CR-V introduced updated infotainment and safety features, aligning with its competitors. The focus on electrification is evident, with a next-generation hybrid powertrain featured in half the lineup. However, this review will concentrate on the EX and EX-L trims, which are powered by a standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine. On the other hand, the 2024 Chevrolet Trax makes a striking return with a complete overhaul. Initially launched as a basic subcompact crossover, the Trax reinvents itself in size, style, and technology, aiming to retain small car owners while attracting new customers. It launched in several trims, with notable improvements in design and tech, positioning it competitively against rivals like the Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks.

Performance

2023 Honda CR-V

8/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10
Performance ratings for both vehicles are tied at 8 out of 10. The 2023 CR-V maintains its turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, delivering 190 horsepower and a smooth ride, though its CVT transmission can dampen the driving experience. Its refined dynamics, impressive fuel economy, and responsive handling stand out, despite some noise under hard acceleration. The 2024 Trax introduces a smaller 1.2-liter turbocharged engine, reducing power slightly to 137 horsepower but improving acceleration and efficiency. The FWD-only setup and car-like handling reflect Chevy's intention to offer a nimble and efficient urban crossover. The emphasis on a more planted driving feel and improved noise cancellation showcases Chevy's efforts to enhance the Trax's driving experience beyond its economic roots.
Form and function

2023 Honda CR-V

9/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10
In the realm of form and function, the 2023 Honda CR-V outshines with a score of 9 out of 10, while the 2024 Chevrolet Trax follows closely with an 8 out of 10. The CR-V prides itself on offering an exceptionally spacious interior, marked by comfort and practicality. It is touted as the roomiest CR-V yet, with a cargo area that provides 39.3 cubic feet of space behind the second row, which can be expanded to 76.5 cubic feet with the seats folded down. This makes it a top contender for those who prioritize space for passengers and luggage alike. The Trax, despite its more compact dimensions, makes a strong case for itself with an increase in size that directly translates to interior space. The rear-seat legroom has seen a notable improvement, and the cargo capacity is commendably spacious for its class, offering 25.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and expanding to 54.1 cubic feet with them folded. This enhancement in space does not uniformly extend to every aspect of the interior, as it experiences a slight reduction in headroom and shoulder room. Nonetheless, the Trax presents a compelling package for those seeking a blend of comfort, visibility, and versatility in a compact crossover.
Technology

2023 Honda CR-V

7/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

9/10
In technology, the CR-V is rated 7 out of 10, with the Trax leading at 9 out of 10. The CR-V's technology improvements bring it up to par with competitors, featuring a user-friendly infotainment system and digital dashboard. However, it falls short of offering a standout tech package compared to its price point. The Trax shines with substantial upgrades, including larger touchscreens, wireless connectivity, and an array of modern tech features uncommon in its class. Its infotainment system is notably user-friendly and feature-rich, elevating the Trax's appeal for tech-savvy consumers.
Safety

2023 Honda CR-V

9/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

7/10
Safety ratings favor the CR-V at 9 out of 10, with the Trax scoring 7 out of 10. Honda enhances its driver assist and safety features under the Honda Sensing suite, making significant strides in protection and assistance technology. The CR-V's comprehensive safety package aims to maintain Honda's reputation for safety. The Trax offers a solid array of safety features, including several driver assists as standard and optional upgrades. However, its overall safety package and lack of all-wheel drive may affect its appeal to safety-conscious buyers.
