Reviews Summary

As a three-row crossover SUV, the Traverse has advantages over both minivans and full-size body-on-frame SUVs, but it also falls short in some ways. The same goes for the Traverse versus its competition. It rides better than full-size models but can’t tow as much and has a similar amount of space to a minivan but it's less accessible.

Verdict: The Traverse provides the space and ride quality that sets crossovers apart from body-on-frame SUVs, but it lacks some of the refinement of its rivals.

Reviews Summary

The more powerful RAV4 PHEV is even stronger for 2026, and Toyota has introduced a new GR Sport trim to showcase its sportier side. The expanded lineup has four distinct trims, and the electric range has increased by at least 20% over the 2025 RAV4, so Toyota has furthered its lead over plug-in hybrid newcomers such as the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage—and even the Lexus NX 450h+.

Verdict: This is the best version of the RAV4, though we can’t recommend the slightly sportier GR Sport until we know exactly how much it will cost. With improved tech and a greater focus on electrification, as well as available DC charging (despite the charge ports changing sides between trims), the RAV4 PHEV leans forward.

2026 Chevrolet Traverse

6/10

2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid

7/10

The 2026 Chevrolet Traverse presented a robust and upright design reminiscent of a smaller Chevrolet Tahoe. Its high-set grille and macho stance were complemented by eye-slit LED headlights and a distinctive air intake/fog light design. The sides featured a clean, semi-rounded shape with a forward-angled pillar behind the rear door, creating a semi-floating roof effect. The Traverse's grille varied by model, with chrome and black options, while the Z71 trim stood out with red front tow hooks and all-terrain tires. Inside, a 17.7-inch touchscreen dominated the dash, accompanied by an 11-inch digital instrument cluster. The interior materials were smart, with soft-touch surfaces and contrasting stitching, offering a comfortable ambiance, especially with available leather upholstery.

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid was available in the Rugged Woodland trim and three Sport grades, including the SE, XSE, and GR Sport. The RAV4 maintained its footprint but added buffer bumpers for increased length. Its design was boxy, with a truck-like presence, and featured boxy wheel arches and bulges over the fenders. The Woodland trim emphasized its ruggedness with a wide front fascia, solid panels replacing fog lights, and chunky all-terrain tires. Sport trims showcased gloss black accents and racier elements, such as red brake calipers and a wide mesh grille. Inside, the RAV4 offered a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.5-inch touchscreen, with a streamlined design and improved user interface.

5/10

2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid

7/10

The 2026 Chevrolet Traverse excelled in road manners, thanks to its car-like unibody architecture, offering better ride and handling than the larger Tahoe. At 204.5 inches long and weighing 4,792 pounds with AWD, the Traverse's handling was more controlled and agile than body-on-frame vehicles. It featured a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Traverse's towing capacity was 5,000 pounds, and its 0-60 mph time was around eight seconds. However, engine noise was a concern, and the AWD system required manual engagement. The Traverse offered various drive modes, including Normal, Sport, Off-Road, Snow/Ice, and Tow/Haul.

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid featured an updated 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine with 186 horsepower, complemented by a larger 22.7-kwh battery pack. The PHEV's power increased to 324 horsepower, making it the most powerful RAV4 to date. It offered a range of 52 miles in EV mode and a 0-60 mph time in the low five seconds. The RAV4 PHEV's handling was enhanced by a strengthened chassis and improved suspension, particularly in the GR Sport trim. The GR Sport sat lower and featured 20-inch black alloy wheels with summer performance tires. The RAV4 PHEV's power transition was seamless, and it offered multiple driving modes, including EV, Auto, Hybrid, and Charge.

7/10

The 2026 Chevrolet Traverse, nearly seven inches shorter than a Tahoe, offered ample passenger space but less cargo capacity. It came standard with second-row captain’s chairs for seven-passenger seating, with an option for a second-row bench to seat eight. The first-row seats were comfortable, with excellent storage options in the center console. Second-row passengers enjoyed good space, while the third row was best suited for children due to limited legroom. The Traverse provided 22.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 56.6 cubic feet behind the second row, and 98 cubic feet behind the first row.

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid maintained its dimensions from the previous generation, optimizing interior space with clever storage features. The base SE was well-equipped with conveniences like a power driver’s seat and heated front seats. The RAV4 offered 37.8 inches of rear legroom, accommodating four passengers comfortably. The cargo area provided 33.6 cubic feet of space, with a total of 63.5 cubic feet when the rear seats were folded. The RAV4 PHEV's interior featured multiple storage shelves and deep door pockets, enhancing practicality.

The base audio system had six speakers, with an option for a 12-speaker Bose system.

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid featured a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an enhanced 10.5-inch touchscreen system, with a larger 12.9-inch touchscreen on top trims. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with customizable tiles and a quick menu for easy access. Toyota's new operating system, Arene, improved responsiveness and loading times.
