2023 Nissan Pathfinder Reviews Summary

Every car shopper out there has a hierarchy of needs. They put some needs above other needs. Whether you are looking for the best fuel economy, the most cargo space, or the newest tech and safety features, certain vehicles excel in some areas or falls behind in others. The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder does not stand out courtesy of any one particular characteristic, but much like the people shopping for it, the Pathfinder is a combination of attributes in one vehicle.

For the 2023 model year, Nissan has introduced the Rock Creek edition. It’s a more rugged version of the Pathfinder. That’s a bit ironic because, like many entrants in this family-hauling segment, the Pathfinder started out decades ago as tough, truck-based SUVs. So while the Pathfinder has evolved into a more comfortable vehicle, the Rock Creek appears to be an attempt to capture the spirit of the early Nissan SUVs. So, how does the Pathfinder stack up within the popular and hotly contested midsize SUV segment? And does the Rock Creek warrant attention as an off-road vehicle?

2023 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

We first got an idea of the GV80 in 2017 at the New York Auto Show when the company debuted a concept. Fast forward to 2021 when we saw the first production model and we knew it would be a hit. Over the past two years, our admiration has only grown. Available with Standard, Advanced, or Prestige packages, the GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of features, offering stellar value for those who recognize a good deal when they see it.

Verdict: With great styling inside and out, plus a healthy choice of potent powertrains, the Genesis GV80 is an attractive and capable option in the midsize luxury SUV segment. It's technology can require a bit of a learning curve, but there are few true faults with this vehicle.

2023 Nissan Pathfinder

8/10

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder carried over its modern design from the previous year, maintaining its futuristic headlights and angular C-pillar, which blended traditional elements with a forward-thinking aesthetic. This design approach ensured the Pathfinder remained relevant and appealing. Inside, the cabin featured clean lines and a sensible layout, making it both visually pleasing and practical for everyday use. The Pathfinder offered a range of trims, from the base S with essential features to the top-tier Platinum, which included luxurious touches like upgraded leather upholstery and a fully digital instrument panel.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV80 exuded sophistication with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille, presenting a stately presence. The exterior's elegance was mirrored inside with quilted leather seats and a dash adorned with metal and matte wood trim. The center console featured three large dials for infotainment, transmission, and drive modes, complemented by a unique two-spoke steering wheel. While the 14.5-inch infotainment screen seemed somewhat detached from the dash, the interior overall was spacious and luxurious, providing a comfortable environment for occupants.

Performance

2023 Nissan Pathfinder

7/10

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder was equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, delivering 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque. The Rock Creek variant offered a slight power boost, with 295 hp and 270 lb-ft. Power was managed through a 9-speed automatic transmission, available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations. The Rock Creek model aimed to enhance off-road capabilities with a taller suspension and off-road shocks, though the ride on regular roads was rougher due to the off-road tires. The Pathfinder's engine provided ample power for city and highway driving, though the new shifter design was criticized for being unintuitive. The vehicle featured a rotary drive mode dial with various settings, including an All-Terrain mode in the Rock Creek, and a towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds with the right equipment.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered two engine options: a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a turbo 3.5-liter V6 producing 375 hp and 391 lb-ft. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While not particularly agile or quick, the GV80 excelled in highway driving, with smooth power delivery and an electronically controlled suspension that adjusted to road conditions. The active noise cancellation further enhanced the quiet and comfortable ride, making it ideal for long commutes.

Form and function

2023 Nissan Pathfinder

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder provided up to 80.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third rows folded, 45 cubic feet with the second row in use, and 16.6 cubic feet with all seats upright. While this was average for its class, it fell slightly short of competitors like the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot. The first two rows offered ample headroom and legroom, with the third row suitable for shorter trips. The optional second-row captain’s chairs facilitated access to the third row. The Pathfinder featured numerous cupholders and storage compartments, and the Rock Creek model's roof rack was practical for carrying up to 220 pounds of cargo.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 compensated for its lack of driving excitement with luxury features and spaciousness. Standard heated front seats and a heated steering wheel were complemented by ventilated front and rear seats in higher trims. The Ergo Motion driver’s seat offered fatigue-reducing adjustments, and the Nappa leather seats added a touch of opulence. While a third row was available, its limited legroom made it suitable only for children. The GV80 boasted a large cargo area, with 34.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 84 cubic feet with the seats folded. It also had a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds with trailer brakes.

Technology

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder came with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with larger 9-inch screens available on higher trims. While the system was user-friendly, some found the graphics dated. Standard features included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and satellite radio. Higher trims added a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless device charging, and additional USB ports. Although not the most cutting-edge, the Pathfinder's tech offerings were sufficient for most needs.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, accompanied by a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster. While the infotainment screen was slightly out of reach, the dial control offered a tactile experience, albeit with a learning curve. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were included, though not wirelessly. The GV80 also offered wireless charging, multiple USB ports, and a remote smart parking assist feature, allowing the vehicle to park itself without the driver inside.

Safety

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder was equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, collision warning, pedestrian detection, and blind-spot monitoring. Higher trims added ProPilot Assist with lane centering and adaptive cruise control, as well as a 360-degree parking monitor and traffic-sign recognition. The Platinum trim included rain-sensing wipers and a head-up display, enhancing safety and convenience.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 was packed with advanced safety features, such as forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. A standout feature was the blind-spot video feed displayed in the digital gauge cluster, providing a clear view of the vehicle's surroundings. The GV80 also offered Highway Drive Assist, which used various systems to provide a hands-on driving aid on approved highways. The NHTSA awarded the GV80 a five-star overall safety rating, while the IIHS rated it Good for crashworthiness and Superior for front crash prevention.
