2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC Reviews Summary

It may be all-new for 2023, but the GLC's redesign is so conservative, it's hard to tell. Bigger changes can be found inside and the overall upgrades keep it at the top of the small luxury SUV class. The previous-generation GLC Coupe returns unchanged but replacements are in the works.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Reviews Summary

The Volkswagen ID.4 is still relatively new to the marketplace (it debuted for the 2021 model year) but VW is already making some important updates to keep it competitive and fulfill goals set when this compact electric SUV first launched.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 adds a new base model and a smaller 62-kilowatt-hour battery pack alongside the carryover 82-kWh to increase affordability. VW will also begin sourcing cars for its United States dealerships from the same Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory that builds the gasoline-powered Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. The automaker has been discussing this since the ID.4 was unveiled, but at first cars for the U.S. came from Zwickau, Germany.

The 2023 ID.4 retains single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain options, but gets revised exterior and interior styling, some software changes, and a few more standard tech features and driver aids.

The new-for-2023 base model is dubbed ID.4 Standard, slotting below the ID.4 S, ID.4 Pro, ID.4 Pro S, and ID.4 Pro S Plus trim levels (the Pro S Plus replaces the Gradient appearance package from previous model years). We recently spent a day driving a Pro S AWD model from Nashville to Chattanooga, along with a shorter drive in an ID.4 Standard model.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class presented a blend of the familiar and the new. While the GLC 300 was redesigned, the Coupe models carried over from the previous year, with new versions expected for the 2024 model year. The changes in the GLC 300 were subtle, with the most noticeable being the narrower taillights, making it easy to mistake for the first-generation model. Despite this, the GLC maintained its classy and timeless design, which had led the small luxury SUV class for much of its production run. The interior saw a more significant update, featuring a large vertical infotainment touchscreen and a tablet-like instrument panel, aligning with newer Mercedes models. The materials and construction remained top-notch, offering a simpler and cleaner cockpit design compared to rivals like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5.

In contrast, the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 underwent subtle styling changes, including a gloss black trim on the front bumper and a more squared-off rear bumper design. The ID.4, based on VW’s MEB platform, was easily distinguishable as an EV but lacked the traditional SUV profile, which might have been a drawback for some buyers. The interior carried over the best qualities from recent VW gasoline models, with a minimalist design and quality feel. The ID.4 offered more interior space than other affordable EVs, with impressive cargo capacity. VW also made functional improvements to the interior for 2023, such as a conventional lid for the center console and a better phone storage spot.

Performance

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

6/10

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class was limited to the GLC 300 trim, powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. It featured a nine-speed automatic transmission with standard rear-wheel drive and optional 4Matic all-wheel drive. The GLC 300 accelerated smoothly, reaching 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, which was average for its class. The brake pedal was a bit soft, but effective, and the suspension favored comfort over sporty handling. The returning GLC 4Matic Coupe had a similar engine, while the AMG GLC 43 Coupe offered a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with 385 hp, reaching 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 offered a new 62-kWh battery pack for the base Standard and S models, with the Pro, Pro S, and Pro S Plus retaining the 82-kWh pack. The single-motor RWD models produced 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque, while the dual-motor AWD models increased output to 295 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The smaller battery pack reduced curb weight by 240 pounds, improving acceleration and handling. The ID.4 provided a comfortable ride but allowed too much body roll for sporty driving. It used regenerative braking but did not offer one-pedal driving, providing a more familiar experience for new EV drivers.

Form and function

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

7/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC offered comfortable front seats with ample adjustment options and firm cushioning. The synthetic leather upholstery was convincingly grained, with real leather available for smoother surfaces. The interior provided adequate storage, though the piano black lid attracted dust and fingerprints. The GLC had plenty of space for front passengers, while the rear seats accommodated average adults, with slightly limited headroom for taller occupants. The standard GLC offered 21.9 cubic feet of cargo space, smaller than rivals, but adequate for most needs. The GLC Coupe's sloping roofline reduced cargo capacity to 17.6 cubic feet and rear headroom by 1.3 inches.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 excelled in interior space, offering more legroom and headroom than competitors like the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Nissan Leaf. It provided 30.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 64.2 cubic feet with them folded. The ID.4 also offered towing capabilities, with a capacity of 2,200 pounds for RWD models and 2,700 pounds for AWD models. VW made small interior changes for 2023, such as a conventional lid for the center console and improved phone storage. Three-zone climate control was available, with rear-seat controls and heated outboard rear seats.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC featured a new interior layout with an 11.9-inch touchscreen, offering sharp graphics and immediate responses. However, its lower placement on the dash made it more distracting to use. The MBUX infotainment system had excellent voice recognition, though it interrupted audio playback. The system lacked physical buttons, making no-look adjustments difficult. Standard connectivity included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with an available Burmester 3D Surround Sound system.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 came standard with a 12.0-inch touchscreen, replacing the previous 10.0-inch screen on lower trims. The infotainment system received software updates for improved responsiveness, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remaining standard. The user interface retained haptic touchpads, which lacked physical feedback and were distracting. The ID.Light feature provided ambient lighting and navigation assistance. The voice recognition system was effective, reducing the need for dashboard controls.

Safety

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC had not yet been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but the previous model received top ratings. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive headlights. Optional features included adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and a surround-view camera system. The Coupe offered cross-traffic alerts and a surround-view camera as standard.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 received a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with five stars in frontal and side crash tests. The 2022 model received the IIHS’ highest “Top Safety Pick+” rating. Standard driver-assist features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, and VW’s Travel Assist 2.0. The ID.4 also added Park Assist Plus, an automated lane-change feature, and a 360-degree camera system for 2023.
