2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2023 Volvo XC60 Reviews Summary

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are smart for certain consumers. They allow people to give electric vehicle ownership a try before diving into the deep end of the pool by acclimating people to nightly plug-ins and the benefits of electric-only driving.

At the same time, they eliminate a phenomenon called “range anxiety,” which is the mild panic EV drivers may feel when their battery gets low. That’s because they also have a gasoline engine, and that means you can take a cross-country trip in one without ever needing to find a charging station.

Talk about a win-win situation. And among luxury PHEVs, the 2023 Volvo XC60 Recharge is an appealing choice. But it certainly does not come cheap.

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

2023 Volvo XC60

10/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 showcased a design that drew inspiration from its sedan counterpart, the G70, particularly above the belt-line. Its split-bar headlights and a distinctive chrome line that curved from behind the rear window were notable design elements that connected it visually to the G70. This chrome bar cleverly suggested a coupe-like SUV without compromising versatility. Inside, the GV70's cabin was a testament to luxury, featuring top-notch materials and excellent fit and finish. The design was both contemporary and classic, with climate controls integrated into a curving bezel and a touchscreen that rose organically from the dash. The GV70's dash included a full touchscreen, a rotary dial, and button controls, offering a user-friendly interface. The gas-powered GV70 was available in two trims, 2.5T and 3.5T, while the Electrified GV70 offered Advance and Prestige trims. The base 2.5T trim came well-equipped with features like power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, and adaptive cruise control. The 3.5T trim added genuine leather upholstery, massaging front seats, and performance-inspired touches. The Electrified Prestige trim impressed with its luxury credentials, featuring cream-colored seats with a quilt stitch pattern and a high-contrast design.

The 2023 Volvo XC60 offered three powertrains, including the B5 with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and mild-hybrid technology, and the B6 with a turbocharged, supercharged, and mild-hybrid engine. The XC60 Recharge featured a turbocharged PHEV powertrain with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder gas engine and an 18.8-kWh battery pack, providing an estimated 35 miles of electric driving. The XC60's design was a testament to Volvo's style and design leadership, with a gracefully aging theme. Inside, the XC60's classic Scandinavian minimalism was evident, with comfortable black leather seats, handsome wood trim, and metal accents. The Ultimate package added opulence with features like a crystal gear selector knob. The XC60 Recharge Ultimate's look and feel were spot-on, with a focus on comfort and luxury.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered two gas-powered engine options: a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GV70's turbo-four engine provided ample power for most driving situations, while the V6 catered to performance enthusiasts with its extra grunt and throaty engine note. The GV70 balanced comfort and sharp handling, offering a refined driving experience. The Electrified GV70 featured a 77.4-kWh battery pack powering two electric motors, producing a combined 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. It offered a smooth acceleration experience, with a Boost button for an extra 54 horsepower for up to 10 seconds. The electric GV70 had a range of 236 miles and supported DC fast charging, replenishing the battery from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.

The 2023 Volvo XC60 Recharge combined a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor, producing a total of 455 horsepower and 423 pound-feet of torque. It offered an estimated 35 miles of electric driving range and a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The XC60 Recharge featured several driving modes, including Hybrid, Power, Pure, Off-road, and Constant AWD, allowing drivers to tailor the driving experience. The XC60 Recharge was exceptionally quick, with a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds. The drivetrain refresh in mid-2022 made it the most powerful in Volvo's history. The XC60 Recharge's electric motor provided a noticeable torque-vectoring effect, enhancing the driving experience. In Pure mode, the XC60 Recharge achieved 38.3 miles of electric driving before switching to hybrid mode. The XC60 Recharge averaged 54.6 mpg on a 65-mile evaluation route, showcasing its efficiency.

Form and function

2023 Genesis GV70

6/10

2023 Volvo XC60

7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 28.9 cubic feet with the rear seats in use, making it competitive in the compact luxury SUV segment. It featured a hands-free power liftgate for added convenience. The GV70's interior included decently large cupholders in the center console, a helpful tray with a retractable lid, and a typical center console bin. While the front seats provided comfortable seating positions, the rear seats had tighter legroom, requiring front-row occupants to slide their seats forward. The rear bench reclined for added comfort.

The 2023 Volvo XC60, a compact crossover SUV, was best suited for carrying four people, though it could accommodate five when necessary. The front seats offered outstanding comfort, wrapped in soft Nappa leather upholstery with heating, ventilation, and power cushion extensions. The back seats were also comfortable, though legroom was tight for taller passengers. The XC60's interior felt spacious thanks to the large panoramic sunroof and supportive seat cushions. Storage space was decent, with practical spots for smaller items in the center console and larger items in the door panel bins and glovebox. The XC60 Recharge offered 25.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat, expanding to 63.3 cubic feet with the back seat folded. It featured a power liftgate, a netted space for the charging cord, and a ski pass-through panel.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 featured a standard 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The touchscreen was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menu navigation. Genesis provided helpful buttons in the center console and a rotary dial for scrolling and selecting, though the proximity of the rotary dial to the vehicle's rotary shifter could cause confusion. The GV70 came equipped with four USB ports, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo system. Available features included ambient lighting, a digital instrument panel, and the Genesis digital key.

The 2023 Volvo XC60 came with a 12-inch digital instrumentation panel, operated via steering wheel controls. The infotainment system was a Google Built-in setup, offering four years of complimentary access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play. It supported both Android and Apple CarPlay, with additional features like SiriusXM satellite radio and Wi-Fi access. The 9-inch portrait-style touchscreen was easy to use, with excellent graphics and an intuitive interface. The voice-recognition system impressed, though it occasionally required specific phrasing for accurate results. The XC60 Recharge's Google Built-in tech handled various requests effectively, and the optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system delivered exceptional audio quality.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, driver attention monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The 2.5T's Advance Package added a blind-spot camera system, reverse automatic emergency braking, and a 360-degree parking camera system. The 3.5T's Sport Advance package included these features. The Electrified GV70 came with most driver-assistance features as standard, except for the head-up display, which was part of the Prestige trim.

The 2023 Volvo XC60 was synonymous with safety, featuring Pilot Assist, Volvo's advanced driver-assistance system combining adaptive cruise control with lane-centering capability. Pilot Assist excelled on multi-lane freeways, providing smooth and accurate performance. The XC60 also featured Oncoming Lane Mitigation, which helped avoid collisions with oncoming vehicles. The XC60 B5 and B6 mild-hybrids received top safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2022 calendar year.
