2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2023 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2023 Nissan Rogue is critical to the automaker’s success. Last year, this compact crossover SUV was the 16th best-selling vehicle in America, significantly outselling the company’s Altima midsize sedan and every other Nissan available in U.S. showrooms. Two years ago, Nissan redesigned the Rogue. Last year, it added a new turbocharged engine. Now, for the 2023 model year, the Rogue SV is available with a new Midnight Edition package that blacks out the exterior trim, while the Rogue Platinum adds Amazon Alexa compatibility. Still, the Rogue faces fresh competition from the redesigned Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage, the all-new Mazda CX-50, and a plug-in hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander.

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

8/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 exhibited a design that drew inspiration from its sedan counterpart, the G70, particularly above the belt-line. Its split-bar headlights and a distinctive chrome line that curved from behind the rear window were notable features that connected it visually to the sedan. This chrome bar cleverly suggested a coupe-like SUV without compromising versatility. Inside, the GV70's cabin was a testament to luxury, with top-notch materials and excellent fit and finish. The design was both contemporary and classic, with climate controls integrated into a curving bezel and a touchscreen that rose organically from the dash. The GV70's dash featured a full touchscreen, complemented by a rotary dial and button controls, offering a tactile experience superior to touch capacitive controls found in some competitors.

In contrast, the 2023 Nissan Rogue maintained a more conservative design approach, with proper proportions and chiseled styling that conveyed a rugged sense of purpose. The Rogue's lineup included S, SV, SL, and Platinum trims, with prices ranging from $27,360 to $37,140, plus a destination charge. The Platinum trim, which we tested, offered a range of upscale features, including diamond-pattern leather seats and soft-touch materials. However, the Rogue's design leaned more towards practicality and functionality, with a focus on providing a comfortable and spacious interior for families. Despite its entry-luxury price point, the Rogue's design choices were more about meeting the quality standards of the compact SUV segment rather than pushing the boundaries of luxury.

Performance

2023 Genesis GV70

7/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered two gas-powered engine options: a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GV70's performance was well-rounded, blending comfort and sharp handling. The Electrified GV70 featured a 77.4-kWh battery powering two electric motors, producing a combined 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 horsepower for short bursts. It offered a range of 236 miles and could fast charge from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, on the other hand, was equipped with a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine featuring Nissan's variable compression design. This engine produced 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque, paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The Rogue offered front-wheel drive as standard, with optional all-wheel drive. While the Rogue's powertrain provided responsive performance in urban settings, it lacked passing power on the highway. The CVT's simulated gear changes could feel dramatic, and the engine's character might not appeal to all drivers. The Rogue's fuel economy was slightly below expectations, averaging 28.9 mpg in combined driving.

Form and function

2023 Genesis GV70

6/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 28.9 cubic feet with the seats in use. It featured a hands-free power liftgate and a well-designed interior with large cupholders and a helpful tray in the center console. While the front seats offered easy adjustability, rear legroom was tighter, requiring front-row occupants to slide their seats forward for rear passenger comfort.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, designed as a family car replacement, offered ample space for four passengers, with the option to accommodate a fifth. The Platinum trim included features like triple-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and premium leather upholstery. The Rogue's Zero Gravity seats provided comfort, though the rear seats were less comfortable due to low-mounted cushions. The Rogue's cargo space was generous, with up to 36.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 74.1 cubic feet with the seats folded. The Divide-N-Hide feature allowed for versatile cargo configurations.

Technology

2023 Nissan Rogue

The 2023 Genesis GV70 came with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menus. The GV70 also included four USB ports, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo system. Ambient lighting and a digital instrument panel were available features.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue featured an older infotainment system with an 8-inch or optional 9-inch touchscreen. The test vehicle had the larger screen, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and a Bose premium audio system. The Rogue also included a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display and a head-up display. However, the Alexa Built-in system struggled with voice recognition, limiting its functionality.

Safety

9/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The Electrified GV70 included most of these features as standard, with the head-up display available in the Prestige trim.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue came equipped with Safety Shield 360, featuring forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. Higher trims offered ProPilot Assist with Navi-link, combining adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance. The Rogue earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, though it received lower scores in specific crash tests.
