2023 Ford Escape Reviews Summary

The Ford Escape holds a special place in crossover history as part of the vanguard that ushered in compact crossovers as a dominant segment of the automotive landscape. But now, more than two decades after its initial debut, the Escape looks like somewhat of an afterthought. While “Escape” may still be a household name, the emergence of the Ford Bronco Sport has relegated it to second-fiddle status. Regardless, the Escape still sells well in a competitive field, and its available up-powered engine gives it an advantage for shoppers who feel a need for extra passing speed.

Verdict: The 2023 Ford Escape offers an impressive array of safety and infotainment technology, and it’s available with a powerful engine upgrade, too. This handsome crossover should appeal to shoppers looking for an upscale design and a tech-forward approach. However, it may feel a bit cramped for some shoppers, and it’s priced on the higher end of the segment.

2024 MINI Countryman Reviews Summary

The new Countryman arrives next year and we know at least one version of the 2025 Countryman will be electric, if not all of them. In the meantime, the 2024 Mini Countryman enters its eighth year in second-generation spec. The base Cooper model comes only in Classic trim this year, the Signature trim package adds a standard navigation system, and the Cooper SE plug-in hybrid is more appealing thanks to a lower-priced base version and more standard features in the top-of-the-line Iconic trim package.

Look and feel

2023 Ford Escape

7/10

2024 MINI Countryman

9/10

The 2023 Ford Escape showcased a departure from its earlier rugged, boxy design, embracing a more European aesthetic. This model featured a refreshed front end with a traditional grille and a stylish LED light bar, giving it a more upscale appearance akin to a Mazda CX-5. The ST-Line Elite trim, which was tested, sported 19-inch wheels and body-color mirror caps, enhancing its sleek look. Inside, the Escape boasted diamond-stitched leather upholstery, though it felt somewhat hard and plasticky. Despite this, the seats were comfortable, and the 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat provided excellent long-distance driving comfort. However, the interior was dominated by plastic materials, some of which felt cost-cutting.

In contrast, the 2024 MINI Countryman retained its classic Mini styling with a wraparound windshield, floating roof, and Union Jack tail lights, exuding a playful and distinctive character. The test vehicle, a Cooper S with Iconic trim, featured premium leather, power-adjustable heated front seats, and a thick-rimmed heated steering wheel. The interior was designed for four adults, offering ample legroom and foot space, though squeezing in a fifth passenger was challenging. The Countryman’s compact dimensions made it easy to park, but it lacked some advanced parking technologies. Cargo space was limited, with 17.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 47.6 cubic feet with the seats folded, though the 40/20/40-split folding design added versatility.

Performance

2023 Ford Escape

8/10

2024 MINI Countryman

7/10

The 2023 Ford Escape offered a choice between two engines. The base option was a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 180 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine could be configured with either FWD or AWD. The more powerful option, available on higher trims like the ST-Line Elite, was a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering 250 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, exclusively with AWD. Despite its power, the Escape was not a performance crossover, with a soft suspension and no paddle shifters for manual gear control. The brakes were predictable and linear, and the steering was well-weighted, avoiding the twitchiness common in some competitors.

The 2024 MINI Countryman offered several powertrain options, with the Cooper S and John Cooper Works (JCW) being the most notable. The JCW featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 301 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque, with an eight-speed sport automatic transmission and AWD, achieving 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds. The Cooper S, with a similar engine, delivered 189 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque, with a seven-speed DCT for FWD or an eight-speed sport automatic for AWD. The Cooper S was quick, reaching 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, and felt zippy in daily driving. However, it was not suited for off-road adventures, and while it handled well on twisty roads, it was not as engaging as the JCW.

Form and function

2023 Ford Escape

6/10

2024 MINI Countryman

6/10

The 2023 Ford Escape provided a comfortable driving experience with supportive seats and excellent ergonomics. The steering wheel was pleasant to hold, and the armrests were well-positioned. However, the Escape fell short in cargo space, offering 37.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 65.4 cubic feet with the seats folded, trailing behind competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Rear-seat legroom was slightly less than rivals, but headroom was ample, and the front-seat backs were designed to maximize space for rear passengers.

Inside the 2024 MINI Countryman, the seating arrangement was ideal for four adults, with supportive seats and a comfortable driving position. The steering wheel was enjoyable to grip, and the interior offered good legroom and foot space. Visibility was excellent, and the compact size made parking easy, though some advanced parking aids were missing. Interior storage was reasonable, but the smartphone charging pad blocked access to the tray beneath it. Cargo space was limited, with 17.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 47.6 cubic feet with the seats folded, though the split-folding design added flexibility.

Technology

2023 Ford Escape

8/10

2024 MINI Countryman

8/10

The 2023 Ford Escape impressed with its Sync 4 technology, featuring an 8-inch or optional 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment display. The larger screen, standard on higher trims, enhanced the cabin's look and was well-organized with tiles for navigation, music, and Bluetooth. The system was easy to navigate, though it was slightly slow to respond, and the volume knob's placement was inconvenient. Despite these minor issues, the feature set and layout were impressive.

The 2024 MINI Countryman, while not a tech powerhouse, offered useful features. It had a small digital instrumentation display and a head-up display projecting information on a small screen. The 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, housed in a round casing, used BMW's iDrive technology with multiple interaction methods, including touchscreen, steering wheel controls, and voice recognition. The system was easy to use once acclimated, though it lacked Android Auto, offering only Apple CarPlay. The Iconic trim included a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, providing excellent audio quality.

Safety

2023 Ford Escape

8/10

2024 MINI Countryman

4/10

The 2023 Ford Escape received a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, with top scores in frontal and side-crash tests. However, the IIHS did not award it a Top Safety Pick due to a Marginal score in the updated side-impact test. The Escape came standard with Ford's Co-Pilot360 suite, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and more. The optional Co-Pilot360 2.0 added adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera.

The 2024 MINI Countryman had limited advanced driving assistance systems, with standard features like forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control was optional on higher trims, but blind-spot monitoring and other advanced features were absent. The IIHS rated the Countryman as Good in crashworthiness evaluations, though some testing was incomplete.
