2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer Reviews Summary

Few automotive nameplates have kept pace with changing market trends like the Chevrolet Trailblazer, which has taken on three very different forms over a relatively short time span.

The Trailblazer name first appeared in 1999 on an appearance package for the S-10 Blazer, a compact SUV derived from the Chevy S-10 pickup truck. Chevy then applied the Trailblazer name to a midsize SUV sold during model years 2002 through 2009. While not based on a pickup truck, this Trailblazer had the hallmarks of an old-school SUV, including body-on-frame construction and available V8 power.

Today’s Chevy Trailblazer has nothing in common with those predecessors except a name. Introduced for the 2021 model year, this Trailblazer is a subcompact crossover with car-like unibody construction shared with the Buick Encore GX, and tiny, efficiency-focused engines. With the Chevy Trax on hiatus until the 2024 model year, the Trailblazer is Chevy’s entry-level SUV for 2023, competing with the likes of the Hyundai Kona and Kia Seltos.

The only changes for 2023 are some new extra-cost paint colors, including Nitro Yellow Metallic, Fountain Blue, and Sterling Gray Metallic, along with an Iridescent Pearl Tricoat roof. Trim levels start with the base LS, and continue with the LT, Activ, and RS. We tested a Chevrolet Trailblazer Activ for this review.

2023 Mazda CX-30 Reviews Summary

The rear-seat room is cramped and the cargo space is tight, but the tradeoff is an appealing design, a classy and high-quality interior, and enjoyable driving dynamics, especially with the available turbocharged engine. Imagine what a Mazda 3 hatchback would be like with a raised suspension and thick lower body cladding, and you'll get the gist of the 2023 CX-30. Updates for 2023 include a more powerful base engine and improved side-impact collision protection.

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

9/10

2023 Mazda CX-30

9/10

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer took inspiration from its larger sibling, the Chevrolet Blazer, showcasing an assertive SUV-like stance paired with upscale design touches that belied its affordable price segment. Its intricate headlight and taillight designs, along with dark chrome trim, provided a premium appearance. The Activ and RS models each had their own unique flair; the Activ model featured a rugged appeal with a faux skid plate and roof rails, while the RS model boasted a sportier aesthetic with a blacked-out trim and a dual exhaust. Both models presented eye-catching contrasting roofs, enhancing their individuality.

In contrast, the Mazda CX-30's design was marked by a blend of dramatic contours and a long hood, which made it appear somewhat nose-heavy. Despite the excessive gray body cladding aimed to underscore its SUV identity, it presented an artful appearance. Inside, the cabin excluded luxury with high-quality materials and an elegant layout, particularly in the Turbo Premium Plus test model that displayed an upscale blend of off-white leather and dark accents, reinforcing the CX-30’s premium market positioning.

Performance

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

2023 Mazda CX-30

8/10

Powering the 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer were two engine options: a standard 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder with 137 horsepower and an optional 1.3-liter that increased output to 155 horsepower. The Trailblazer’s performance was satisfactory with its nine-speed automatic transmission, and despite some rough shifting, it provided a poised and relatively comfortable ride even on uneven terrains thanks to the Activ-specific dampers.

Meanwhile, the Mazda CX-30 came equipped with a 191 horsepower 2.5-liter engine in its standard setup, while the turbocharged variant ramped up the power to 250 horsepower on premium fuel. All models featured AWD and a six-speed automatic with quick, responsive handling characteristics that shone on twisty roads. However, some criticism was directed at the CX-30's small fuel tank and the occasional harshness felt over speed bumps within city limits.

Form and function

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

2023 Mazda CX-30

3/10

The Chevrolet Trailblazer, despite its compact dimensions, offered a respectable 54.4 cubic feet of maximum cargo space, which was slightly less than some competitors like the Kia Seltos. The vehicle’s interior, though well-utilized, felt cramped with a loaded weekend’s luggage for the family. The Mazda CX-30 provided even less cargo space at 45.2 cubic feet when the rear seats were folded, and suffered from a lack of legroom in the rear seats, although it offered luxurious fittings like a premium sound system and power liftgate in higher trims.

Technology

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

8/10

2023 Mazda CX-30

4/10

The Trailblazer’s tech suite included a standard 7-inch touchscreen with optional upgrades to an 8-inch version, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Although it lacked a fully digital instrument cluster, the setup was user-friendly and adequate for most drivers’ needs. Conversely, the CX-30’s infotainment system faced criticism for its non-touch interface which required users to rely on a rotary controller, complicating what could otherwise be straightforward adjustments.

Safety

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

9/10

2023 Mazda CX-30

9/10
Safety ratings were strong for both models; the Trailblazer achieved a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and received a five-star NHTSA rating, thanks to its comprehensive suite of safety features which included advanced driver-assistance technologies. The CX-30 also boasted impressive safety features and technology, earning a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS. Both vehicles offered robust safety profiles suited to family use.
