2022 Volkswagen Atlas Reviews Summary

Until 2018, Volkswagen seemingly ignored the fact that Americans wanted roomy, functional SUVs. But that year, a right-sized Tiguan arrived ready to challenge the leaders in the compact SUV class and the family-sized Atlas went on sale to wage war in the three-row SUV segment. Both addressed criticism that Volkswagen was out of touch by going above and beyond with regard to passenger comfort, cargo space, and utility.

Now, five years later, the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas is essentially unchanged following a substantial refresh for the 2021 model year. And though the 2022 Atlas remains a study in contrast, it is easy to understand why people buy it. Sometimes, size does matter.

2023 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

In sophisticated circles, the XC90 can feel like an old friend. Its design has evolved subtly over the past twenty years, making it recognizable without looking old. For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved, too. Out with the T5 and T6 engines, in with the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. Finally, Google lovers will absolutely want to investigate the new XC90’s forward-thinking infotainment technology.

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

7/10

2023 Volvo XC90

10/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas carried over with minor modifications from the previous year, simplifying its lineup to six trim levels: SE, SE with Technology, SEL, SEL R-Line, SEL R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line. The Atlas featured more standard equipment across most models, with pricing ranging from $34,355 to $51,505, plus a $1,195 destination charge. The SEL Premium R-Line trim, with its 21-inch wheels and R-Line design elements, gave the Atlas a more upscale appearance. However, despite its bold exterior, the interior materials were somewhat disappointing, with an abundance of hard, shiny plastics that detracted from the overall quality.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC90 showcased a significant evolution in Volvo's design language. The XC90's purposeful yet understated front end, assertive grille, and distinctive "Thor’s Hammer" headlights marked a departure from the boxy designs of the past. Our test vehicle, an AWD Ultimate trim, featured 21-inch wheels and Platinum Gray paint, adding a touch of drama and depth to its appearance. Inside, the XC90 exuded elegance with its two-tone leather steering wheel, metal Bowers and Wilkins speaker covers, Orrefors crystal shift knob, and luxurious Nappa leather upholstery. The minimalist design, complemented by wood deco inlays, created a serene and sophisticated cabin environment.

Performance

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

5/10

2023 Volvo XC90

8/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas offered two engine options: a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6. The turbocharged engine produced 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, requiring premium fuel for optimal performance. It was paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and available in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and 4Motion all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. The turbo-four had a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds and an EPA fuel economy rating of 22-23 mpg combined. However, the V6 engine, which generated 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, was recommended for its better towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, despite its lower fuel economy of 19-20 mpg combined.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 introduced new B5 and B6 engines, replacing the older T5 and T6 powertrains. Both new engines featured mild-hybrid technology, enhancing fuel efficiency and smoothness. The B5 engine, with a turbocharger and 48-volt mild-hybrid system, produced 247 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The B6 engine, which added a supercharger to the mix, delivered 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The mild-hybrid system improved the XC90's auto stop-start technology, making it nearly imperceptible. The XC90's driving experience was enjoyable, with quick acceleration, a responsive eight-speed automatic transmission, and excellent noise insulation. However, the XC90 lacked extensive off-road capabilities, focusing more on a refined on-road experience.

Form and function

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

9/10

2023 Volvo XC90

6/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas excelled in interior space and comfort. With the discontinuation of the base S trim, the Atlas now featured V-Tex leatherette seating, heated front seats, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat as standard. Higher trims added tri-zone automatic climate control, ambient cabin lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and genuine leather upholstery. The Atlas offered exceptional roominess, accommodating seven passengers comfortably, even in the third row. Cargo space was also impressive, with 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 55.5 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 96.8 cubic feet with both rear rows folded.

The 2023 Volvo XC90, while elegant, had some space and storage limitations. The front seats were comfortable, but the lack of dedicated storage for smaller items, such as cell phones, was a drawback. The second row was reasonably spacious, but accessing the third row was challenging, especially with the standard bench seat. The XC90 offered 12.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row in place, 41.8 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 65.5 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. These figures were lower than some competitors, making the XC90 less practical for larger cargo loads.

Technology

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

2023 Volvo XC90

7/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas came standard with the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrument cluster, featuring an 8-inch display that expanded to 10.25 inches in higher trims. The SE trim had a 6.5-inch touchscreen with last-generation infotainment, while other trims featured the next-generation MIB3 system with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Car-Net connected services. However, the user experience was hindered by slow loading times and a cumbersome process for tuning the radio and using voice commands.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 featured a 9-inch vertically oriented touchscreen running Google OS, making it the first vehicle to offer this technology as standard. Google Maps, Spotify, NPR, and Google Assistant were integrated into the system, providing a seamless user experience. However, the reliance on the touchscreen for many functions, such as adjusting the heated steering wheel and seat positions, could be frustrating. Despite this, the natural-language recognition and integration with Google Home devices added convenience and functionality.

Safety

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

7/10

2023 Volvo XC90

9/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including automatic post-collision braking, Front Assist, Side Assist, and Rear Traffic Alert. Higher trims added adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane-keeping assistance, and Travel Assist. However, the Lane Assist system had issues with old construction markings, and the inability to disable it easily was a drawback. The Atlas received decent crash-test ratings but did not earn a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 continued Volvo's legacy of safety with a five-star rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and Pilot Assist, which combined adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance. These technologies worked well, even in challenging traffic conditions, making the XC90 a compelling choice for safety-conscious buyers.
