2022 Nissan Pathfinder Reviews Summary

You said it and Nissan listened. The automaker is bringing back much of the heralded capability of the classic Pathfinder, as well as a rugged-ish body style, for the 2022 model year. Thoughtful innovations and features make the Pathfinder more than just a competent family hauler while Nissan’s safety tech puts minds at ease.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class sits at the top of the automaker’s luxury SUV range. The three-row GLS is the biggest SUV Mercedes offers, and the “S” in its names signifies its status as the SUV equivalent of Mercedes’ flagship S-Class sedan.

The SUV that’s now known as the GLS was launched for the 2007 model year as the GL-Class, when Mercedes decided it needed a bigger, more luxurious SUV to sit above the M-Class in its lineup. The GL-Class and M-Class were rebadged GLS-Class and GLE-Class, respectively, in 2014 when Mercedes introduced a new naming scheme across its lineup.

The current version of the GLS was introduced for the 2020 model year, and represents the model’s third generation. It’s aimed at other full-size luxury SUVs, including the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, and Lexus LX.

Mercedes withdrew most of its V8 models from the United States for the 2022 model year, leaving only the base six-cylinder GLS 450 4Matic model. The automaker is expected to begin resuming dealer orders for V8 models as you read this, though, so the GLS 580 4Matic, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS 600 4Matic models should return to showrooms soon. Because it was the only version available at the time, we tested a GLS 450 for this review.

2022 Nissan Pathfinder

9/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder represented a significant leap in design for the Japanese automaker, incorporating cues from Nissan’s contemporary SUV aesthetic. The vehicle boasted a refreshed front with an updated V-motion grille echoed in models like the Rogue and Armada. Complementing the new grille were LED headlights and slim LED daytime running lights. This setup seamlessly connected to the bulkier, slated C-pillar, a visual homage to the original Pathfinder. The model also featured a striking, bold nameplate spanning the broad taillights. Notably, the Pathfinder was available in 14 paint jobs and color combinations, with optional features like a black roof adding to its visual flair.

Conversely, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, particularly in its base GLS 450 form, maintained a more subdued and elegant aesthetic. The design was intentionally less flashy compared to competitors such as the Cadillac Escalade and Range Rover. For those seeking additional visual drama, higher-end models like the AMG GLS 63 and Maybach GLS 600 4Matic offered enhanced features such as chrome accents and larger wheels. Inside, the GLS 450's interior offered luxury without extravagance, blending ambient lighting, a panoramic roof, and high-quality materials, even in its more basic trim.

Performance

2022 Nissan Pathfinder

8/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder was equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque. Despite some enthusiasts' disappointment over the lack of alternative fuel options, the V6 proved robust. The new nine-speed automatic transmission, replacing the older CVT, provided smooth shifts. The Pathfinder offered both front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations. The AWD model featured seven drive and terrain modes, compared to five in the FWD. Fuel economy for the FWD Pathfinder was estimated at 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, with a combined 23 mpg, while the AWD variant offered marginally better performance on the highway. The Pathfinder also prided itself on a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds, supported by advanced trailer sway control technology.

In contrast, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 featured a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and an EQ Boost mild-hybrid system. This configuration produced 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, with additional short-burst power from the electric motor. The GLS 450 excelled in providing a smooth, potent drive, thanks to its inherent balance and the inline-six engine's characteristics. However, the air suspension's body control was less stellar, exhibiting too much motion over bumps and in corners. The GLS 450 offered a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds, though it fell short of some of its competitors.

Form and function

2022 Nissan Pathfinder

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

8/10

The interior of the Nissan Pathfinder was designed with family flexibility in mind. Noise reduction was a focal point, achieved through improved insulation materials, thicker glass, and innovative door designs. The Pathfinder’s second-row seats featured the EZ Flex Latch and Glide technology, allowing easy access to the third row with the touch of a button. The removable second-row center console added to its functional appeal. Cargo space included 16.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 45.0 cubic feet with the third row folded, and a maximum of 80.5 cubic feet with both rows stowed. Additional under-floor storage of 54 liters offered more utility.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class also offered a versatile interior with a standard seven-seat configuration and an optional six-seat setup with captain’s chairs. The second-row’s ability to slide collectively increased legroom significantly. The GLS provided 17.4 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats up, expanding to 42.7 cubic feet (or 48.7 cubic feet with seats slid forward) with the third row down. Folding both the second and third rows flat opened up 84.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The GLS also featured power-folding seats and a tailgate, with the air suspension aiding in ease of loading and unloading cargo.

Technology

7/10

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder came standard with a robust suite of technology. Base models featured an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, six-speaker audio system, and various connectivity options, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Platinum trim level introduced additional features like a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 9-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, and a head-up display. Higher trims also benefited from a 13-speaker Bose Premium Audio system.

Similarly, the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class boasted advanced technology through the MBUX infotainment system that included a 12.3-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. Standard features were extensive, covering Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and a 13-speaker Burmester audio system. Despite the high-tech interior, some challenges arose, particularly with the touchpad controller's sensitivity and the misleading navigation system.

Safety

2022 Nissan Pathfinder

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

6/10

The Nissan Pathfinder equipped every model with Nissan Safety Shield 360, featuring a suite of safety tools such as automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning. Upper trims received an extra airbag and surround-view monitor, though the Pathfinder had not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class included a comprehensive list of safety features in the base model: forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and Crosswind Assist, to name a few. Optional features included advanced driver-assistance tools, such as Active Steering Assist and Evasive Steering Assist. Similar to the Pathfinder, crash-test ratings for the GLS were pending at the time of publication.
