2022 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

It’s easy for a luxury brand to lose stature and cachet, but it’s hard for a mainstream brand to gain it. Nevertheless, Mazda is giving it the good old college try, having discussed its plan to become a premium brand for more than half a decade.

Unlike some automakers that rely solely on marketing to support their premium brand positioning, Mazda heavily invests in everything from design and engineering to dealership facilities, all to ensure there is substance behind its claim. Now, numerous updates to its most popular model elevate the 2022 Mazda CX-5 solidly into premium territory.

Don’t believe us? Drive one of the turbocharged versions of the 2022 CX-5 back to back with a similarly priced Audi Q3, Buick Envision, BMW X1, GMC Terrain, or Mercedes-Benz GLA, and you’ll see what we mean.

2023 Subaru Forester Reviews Summary

Sheer practicality defines the 2023 Subaru Forester, a compact crossover SUV where form follows function without fail. In turn, the 2023 Forester possesses the power to make your life easier in nearly every respect. From its standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and generous ground clearance to its roomy interior and sizable cargo hold, it effortlessly tackles most daily tasks with a shrug.

This year, Subaru continues to refine the Forester, adding next-generation EyeSight safety features and an improved standard infotainment system. Unfortunately, though, the Forester still lacks a turbocharged engine option or an electrified drivetrain.

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2023 Subaru Forester

5/10

Casting a glance at the 2022 Mazda CX-5, you might have wondered what changed for that year compared to previous models. Mazda updated the LED headlights and taillights with more distinctive illumination. This change aimed to address the common issue of CX-5 owners driving without their lights on. Additionally, the 2022 model sported new bumpers, a revised grille, a redesigned rear liftgate, and newly designed alloy wheels. The top-of-the-line Signature trim featured body-color lower exterior trim, reinforcing Mazda’s ambition to align with premium brand aesthetics.

Inside, the CX-5 retained its familiar characteristics. The Signature trim’s luxuriously appointed interior included premium Nappa leather upholstery, real wood trim, and polished metallic accents. For the 2022 model, Mazda introduced new seats, enhancing the comfort and support they previously lacked.

The CX-5’s lineup received a significant overhaul, moving away from traditional trim levels to a more complex array. Buyers could select between the CX-5 2.5 S and the CX-5 2.5 Turbo, with the latter featuring a turbocharged engine. The 2.5 S trim offered various options from base to Premium Plus, with prices ranging from $25,900 to $33,950. Conversely, the 2.5 Turbo trims started at $36,400, with the Signature trim topping at $38,650. Our test of a 2.5 Turbo came with optional Soul Red paint and additional features, bringing the total to $39,445.

In contrast, the 2023 Subaru Forester did not significantly deviate from the design template that had defined it for past decades. This year, it ranged from Base to Touring trims, priced from $26,395 to $36,495. Our Touring trim test vehicle cost $37,720. The Forester’s design language resembled a smaller Subaru Ascent, with flared fenders, a narrow waist, and upswept beltline. Each trim came with robust roof rails, with the Wilderness trim offering an impressive 800-pound static weight rating for roof-top camping.

Inside the Forester, the Touring trim boasted exclusive Saddle Brown leather and metallic accents, signifying a commitment to comfort and style. Traditional Subaru design elements persisted, including an 8-inch touchscreen and an analog driver display. Despite the abundance of hard plastics, the Forester’s interior remained functional and easy to clean. The control layout, relying on traditional buttons and knobs, favored usability over aesthetics, maintaining a straightforward and back-to-basics approach.

Performance

2022 Mazda CX-5

2023 Subaru Forester

7/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 offered a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine in its 2.5 S trim, generating 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. These figures were competitive for a base engine. The six-speed automatic transmission received updates for more responsive performance, and all CX-5 variants came with standard all-wheel drive (AWD). The EPA rated this powertrain at 26 mpg in combined driving.

For those favoring turbocharged engines, the 2.5 Turbo trim ran on premium gas to deliver 256 hp and 320 pound-feet of torque—or 227 hp and 310 pound-feet on regular gas. This version also employed a revised six-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD. The EPA rated it for 24 mpg in combined driving, though real-world testing indicated a lower 21.1 mpg. The 2.5 Turbo and upper trims added Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) with Normal, Sport, and Off-Road settings, further enhancing driving dynamics. The CX-5 showcased improved structural rigidity and suspension tuning, reducing body roll and providing sporty handling akin to that of luxury SUVs.

In comparison, the 2023 Subaru Forester's performance centered around a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. This engine powered all four wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and SI-Drive system allowed for Sport mode engagements. Exclusive to non-Base trims, the Forester’s X-Mode traction system added modes for various terrains, improving off-road capability.

Our test of the Forester Touring demonstrated its adeptness in adverse weather conditions and on challenging terrains. While the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine proved adequate, it remained less exciting compared to turbo alternatives. The superb driving dynamics, however, ensured a smooth and engaging ride, aided by precise steering, responsive brakes, and well-tuned suspension. Despite heavier competition, the Forester provided a dependable and confident performance both on-road and off-road.

Form and function

Mazda addressed previous complaints about the CX-5’s ride, handling, and front seat comfort in the 2022 model. The new seats offered enhanced support, while the sporty driving position improved control ergonomics. Most trims featured a height-adjustable front passenger seat, a rarity in this segment. Our 2.5 Turbo test vehicle included dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel, further emphasizing comfort.

Nevertheless, the rear seat remained snug, with heated outboard cushions and air conditioning vents providing some respite. The control layout continued to be a pain point due to the non-touchscreen Mazda Connect infotainment system, which required acclimatization.

Storage space in the CX-5 was adequate. The luggage compartment provided 30.9 cubic feet with the rear seats up and expanded to 59.3 cubic feet when folded down, which was more competitive against luxury SUVs than mainstream crossovers.

On the flip side, the 2023 Subaru Forester presented a practical interior design focused on functionality. The Premium trim included a panoramic sunroof and various comfort features. The Touring trim offered advanced settings like an eight-way power-adjustable front passenger seat and heated rear seats.

One of the Forester's standout features was its excellent outward visibility, aided by large windows and mirrors. However, the untinted panoramic sunroof caused significant solar heating, necessitating the shade closure during sunny days. While the front seats provided ample comfort, the back seats, though spacious, lacked proper leg support and reclined too much.

The Forester excelled in storage space, boasting useful cargo areas and multiple storage compartments. Behind the back seat, it offered 26.9 cubic feet of cargo space (up to 28.9 cubic feet in the Base trim). With the back seats down, capacity expanded to 69.1 cubic feet (74.2 cubic feet in the Base model), performing well within the compact SUV segment.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 retained its Mazda Connect infotainment system with a 10.25-inch non-touch display. Mazda's preference for center console controls and lack of natural voice recognition posed challenges for user-friendliness. While one could acclimate to this system, the absence of touchscreen and advanced voice recognition left something to be desired.

Standard features included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a generous trial subscription to Mazda Connected Services. A 10-speaker Bose premium sound system was available on higher trims, complementing the overall tech experience, but a hassle-free interface was notably missing.

Conversely, the 2023 Subaru Forester appeared outdated at first glance but provided a robust technology suite upon closer inspection. The base trim featured a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Premium trim and above offered satellite radio, HD radio, and Starlink connected services.

An 8-inch touchscreen with navigation and Harman Kardon premium audio system was available in higher trims. However, a wireless charger was absent. The Forester's older Starlink system facilitated an easy user experience, thanks to its separate climate controls and intuitive main menu buttons. Despite the voice-recognition system's frustrating performance, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto provided satisfactory alternatives.

For the 2023 Subaru Forester, Subaru's next-generation EyeSight system marked a significant update. Enhanced software and cameras provided a broader field of view, improving performance. Foresters equipped with blind-spot monitoring included Automatic Emergency Steering, aiding in obstacle avoidance. Higher trims added Rear Automatic Braking (RAB), though its sensitivity sometimes proved disconcerting.
