2022 Jeep Compass Reviews SummaryJeep now considers itself a premium brand. That means it prices its vehicles a little higher than the equivalents offered by mainstream nameplates but still below the traditional luxury marques. In exchange for this price premium, Jeep offers class-leading off-roading capabilities, a Jeep Wave benefits program, admission into “the club” of Jeep owners, and, with some of its models, high-end trim levels loaded with upscale materials, finishes, and features. This year, Jeep improves the 2022 Compass in an effort to better qualify it as a premium entry. Based on a week spent in the ritzy Compass High Altitude, we think the SUV is better it was than before. But does it meet the expected standard? Not quite.
2022 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews SummaryThe iconic Range Rover receives a redesign for 2022, though from the outside the changes can be easy to miss. The interior has been updated with a simpler design and a notable improvement in technology. If you have the budget and desire for a large premium luxury SUV, perhaps with some off-road capabilities, you should start your search here.

The 2022 Jeep Compass, despite receiving some exterior styling updates and new wheel designs, retained much of its appearance from its 2017 redesign. It resembled a smaller version of the Grand Cherokee, with our High Altitude test vehicle featuring attractive 19-inch multi-spoke wheels that matched its upscale paint job. Inside, the Compass High Altitude impressed with a new dashboard design, updated digital instrumentation, and luxury-grade leather seats, elevating its status as a premium SUV. The High Altitude trim was the most expensive in the lineup, which started with the base Sport trim and included models like Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk, with prices ranging from $26,020 to $35,085, excluding destination charges.
In contrast, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover underwent an evolutionary redesign, maintaining its broad, rounded face and large sheet metal expanses. The most notable change was at the rear, where thin LED strips replaced the old square taillights. The Range Rover emphasized its size, especially in the long-wheelbase version, which added eight inches in length. Inside, the cabin was simplified with fewer buttons and a larger tablet-like touchscreen, enhancing its modern look. Premium leather and rich wood trim adorned the interior, exuding luxury. The Range Rover's solid feel and quiet cabin made it a standout in the luxury SUV segment, rivaling even more expensive alternatives like Maybach or Bentley.

The 2022 Jeep Compass was equipped with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 177 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. Despite its "Tigershark" moniker, the engine lacked the power to compete with other SUVs. A turbocharger would have improved its performance, especially for those seeking mountain adventures. The nine-speed automatic transmission, paired with all-wheel drive, aimed to maximize fuel efficiency but resulted in a busy and unrewarding powertrain character. The Compass averaged 23.8 mpg in testing, slightly below the EPA's 25 mpg estimate. With 8.1 inches of ground clearance, it handled light off-roading well, but the Trailhawk trim offered more capability with features like a low-range AWD system and 8.6 inches of ground clearance.
The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover offered two powertrains: the base P400 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 395 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, and the P530 with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine delivering 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. The P400 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, impressive for its nearly 6,000-pound weight. The Range Rover's handling was surprisingly agile, with well-managed body roll and a calm, composed driving experience. Rear-wheel steering enhanced maneuverability, and the Terrain Response system optimized off-road capability without sacrificing ride quality.
The 2022 Jeep Compass shared similar interior dimensions with the Renegade and Cherokee, offering enough space for four adults and their luggage. The High Altitude trim featured eight-way power-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats. The dual-pane panoramic sunroof and redesigned dashboard added to the premium feel. The Compass provided 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat, expanding to 59.8 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down, surpassing the more expensive Cherokee model.
The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover boasted ample space in the first two rows, enhanced by large windows and a panoramic sunroof. Front seats offered long-distance comfort with available massage functions. Storage options included two glove boxes, a wireless charging pad, and a large center console bin. The second row provided power recline and sliding adjustments, along with climate controls and USB-C ports. The optional third row, while limited in headroom for adults, offered adequate legroom for smaller passengers. Cargo space measured 17.1 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 43.1 cubic feet with it folded, and a maximum of 93 cubic feet behind the front seats. The split tailgate and air suspension height adjustment facilitated loading.
The 2022 Jeep Compass featured the new Uconnect 5 infotainment system, which was five times faster than its predecessor. It offered an 8.4-inch standard touchscreen, with a 10.1-inch upgrade available. The system supported wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa, along with a nine-speaker Alpine premium sound system. Voice recognition was fast and accurate, though it struggled with specific requests. Overall, Uconnect 5 impressed but fell short of the best in the industry.
The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover introduced the Pivi Pro infotainment system with a 13-inch touchscreen. It featured wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a wireless charging pad. The Meridian audio system delivered impressive sound quality, with a 35-speaker upgrade available. The system integrated Amazon Alexa, remote automated parking, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. While the screen's placement required more attention, the smart climate controls helped maintain focus on the road.
The 2022 Jeep Compass came standard with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Highway Assist, combining adaptive cruise control and lane-centering, was set to be added later. The adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping systems worked well, though the forward-collision warning system occasionally gave false positives. Safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were not available at the time of review.
The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover included standard safety features like frontal collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and a surround-view camera system. These features performed as intended, with the surround-view cameras proving especially useful off-road. While adequately equipped, the Range Rover lacked some advanced features offered by rivals. Crash test results from the IIHS and NHTSA were not available.
