2022 INFINITI QX80 Reviews Summary

Infiniti's venerable QX80 full-size SUV is refined for 2022 with a widescreen, high-definition 12.3-inch Infiniti InTouch display that includes wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto compatibility. Standard across the board, the new display houses the navigation system with lane guidance and Infiniti InTouch connected services. An all-new wireless smartphone charger appears, along with a Bose premium sound system and intelligent cruise control. But is it enough to keep the luxury SUV's aging design relevant?

2023 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

We first got an idea of the GV80 in 2017 at the New York Auto Show when the company debuted a concept. Fast forward to 2021 when we saw the first production model and we knew it would be a hit. Over the past two years, our admiration has only grown. Available with Standard, Advanced, or Prestige packages, the GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of features, offering stellar value for those who recognize a good deal when they see it.

Verdict: With great styling inside and out, plus a healthy choice of potent powertrains, the Genesis GV80 is an attractive and capable option in the midsize luxury SUV segment. It's technology can require a bit of a learning curve, but there are few true faults with this vehicle.

Look and feel

2022 INFINITI QX80

7/10

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 INFINITI QX80 shared a familial resemblance with the Nissan Armada, boasting a platform and mechanicals that were similar. Its size was considered just right, neither too large nor too small, and its front-end styling was distinct due to the Infiniti grille. The tasteful integration of LED lighting and conservative use of chrome added to its upscale appearance. The interior, while outfitted with upscale materials like wood trim and quilted leather seats, still bore a resemblance to the Armada's design. Despite its attractive and comfortable cabin, the QX80's interior fell short of the high standards set by its premium full-size SUV competitors.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 exuded sophistication with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille, presenting a stately midsize SUV profile. The exterior was further enhanced by a matte Brunswick Green paint job and 22-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the dark green quilted leather seats and a dash split by thin air vents created a luxurious atmosphere. The center console featured three large dials for infotainment, transmission, and drive modes, while the two-spoke steering wheel added a unique touch. Although the 14.5-inch infotainment screen seemed somewhat out of place, the interior was spacious and luxurious, offering a pleasant environment for occupants.

Performance

2022 INFINITI QX80

8/10

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2022 INFINITI QX80 was powered by a robust 400-horsepower, 5.6-liter V8 engine with 413 lb-ft of torque, delivering impressive performance and a pleasing exhaust note. The seven-speed automatic transmission provided smooth and seamless shifts, enhancing the driving experience. The QX80's off-road capabilities were notable, with a computer-controlled transfer case and ample ground clearance. It offered a generous towing capacity of 8,500 pounds, making it suitable for hauling large trailers or boats. Despite its size, the QX80 managed to control body lean effectively, thanks to the Hydraulic Body Motion Control system.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a turbo 3.5-liter V6, with the latter producing 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. While not particularly quick, the GV80 excelled in highway driving, providing smooth power delivery and shifts. The electronically controlled suspension and active noise cancellation contributed to a comfortable and quiet ride. However, the GV80's handling was less precise compared to its German rivals, and its acceleration was slower than some competitors.

Form and function

2022 INFINITI QX80

7/10

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 INFINITI QX80 required a climb to enter due to its tall ride height, but once inside, it offered a spacious and airy cabin. Front-seat head- and legroom were good, although not as generous as in some competitors. The QX80 could accommodate up to eight passengers with the optional second-row bench seat, but the third row was cramped for adults. Cargo space was limited compared to others in its class, with 16.6 cubic feet behind the third row and 95.1 cubic feet with all seats folded.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 compensated for its lack of driving excitement with numerous luxury features. Heated and ventilated seats, a tri-zone climate control system, and a 21-speaker stereo system were among the highlights. The GV80 offered a third-row option, but legroom was limited. Cargo space was impressive, with 34.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 84 cubic feet with the seats folded. The GV80 also had a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds, suitable for various hauling needs.

Technology

2022 INFINITI QX80

6/10

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2022 INFINITI QX80 featured a 12.3-inch Infiniti InTouch display with Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. A Bose 13-speaker sound system was standard, with a 17-speaker Performance Series Bose system available on the top trim. The QX80 lacked Infiniti's ProPilot Assist advanced driving-assistance system due to its older architecture, which limited its technological offerings compared to newer models.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 came with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster. While the infotainment screen was slightly out of reach, the system included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though not wirelessly. The GV80 featured remote smart parking assist, allowing the vehicle to park itself without the driver inside. This innovative feature added convenience and ease to parking in tight spaces.

Safety

2022 INFINITI QX80

7/10

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 INFINITI QX80 was equipped with a range of standard safety features, including forward automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. However, it received a three-star rating for rollover resistance from the NHTSA, and the IIHS had not rated it for safety.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 boasted an array of advanced driver aids, such as forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. It featured a video feed of the blind spot in the digital gauge cluster, enhancing safety. The GV80 received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and a Good rating for crashworthiness from the IIHS, with Superior ratings in front crash prevention.
