2022 GMC Terrain vs 2022 Chevrolet Blazer

The 2022 GMC Terrain received updates to its front styling, wheel designs, taillights, and interior trim. The new AT4 trim level featured a bolder grille design, black 17-inch alloy wheels with sport-terrain tires, and AT4 badges. GMC equipped the AT4 with a steel skid plate under the front end to protect vital mechanical components, anticipating that some owners might test its off-road capabilities. The test vehicle came with Ebony Twilight metallic paint, black leather interior, and several packages, bringing the MSRP to $41,810. Despite the high price, the Terrain's interior materials and execution did not fully meet expectations, with some features like the head-up display and pushbutton transmission controls feeling less intuitive and premium.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer, offered in 2LT, 3LT, Premier, and RS trims, saw few changes for the year. The RS trim included a V6 engine and a sophisticated twin-clutch AWD system. The Premier trim featured revised bumper and bodyside trim and redesigned wheels. The test vehicle, a Blazer RS, came with optional AWD, extra-cost paint, and several packages, totaling $49,000. The Blazer's Camaro-inspired design was appealing, especially with 20-inch wheels. However, the black trim on the rear bumper gave it an unfinished look. Inside, the Blazer featured an 8-inch touchscreen, innovative climate controls, and red interior accents that matched the exterior paint, adding a layer of sophistication.

The 2022 GMC Terrain was powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The engine's torque was available between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm, but there was a delay off the line. The nine-speed automatic transmission kept the Terrain in the torque band once rolling. The Terrain AT4 offered FWD, AWD, Off-Road mode, and Hill Descent Control. However, torque steer was an issue in FWD mode. The AT4 had 7.9 inches of ground clearance and a four-wheel independent suspension, providing a smooth ride on highways and city streets. Off-road, the Terrain AT4 struggled with ground clearance, and the sport-terrain tires lacked grip on curves. The EPA rating was 26 mpg, and the test vehicle achieved 26.2 mpg.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer came with a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine generating 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The Blazer RS featured a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 308 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, paired with a dual-clutch AWD system. The V6 engine provided satisfying acceleration but was loud and unrefined. The Blazer RS felt firm and sporty in city and suburban driving, with decent grip from the 20-inch wheels. However, on back roads, the Blazer's suspension and nine-speed automatic transmission were less pleasing. The EPA rating for the Blazer RS AWD was 21 mpg, and the test vehicle averaged 20.5 mpg.

The 2022 GMC Terrain offered a roomy interior with numerous comfort-enhancing features and storage solutions. The AT4 trim included power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The back seat was spacious with plenty of legroom and foot room. The Terrain had various storage slots and a cargo space of 29.6 cubic feet, expandable to 63.3 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down. The front passenger seat could also be folded down for longer items.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer's interior was comfortable and useful. The RS trim featured black leather upholstery with red perforations, power-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, and a heated steering wheel. The Blazer's back seat was wide and flat, with plenty of room for legs and feet. It also slid forward and back on tracks for added cargo or passenger space. The Blazer had ample storage space, including a large glove compartment, a bin under the center armrest, and door panel shelves. The cargo area measured 30.5 cubic feet, expandable to 64.2 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down.

The 2022 GMC Terrain offered two infotainment systems: a 7-inch touchscreen for SLE trim and an 8-inch touchscreen for SLT, AT4, and Denali trims. Additional safety features included a rear-seat reminder system, Teen Driver technology, a Safety Alert Seat, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and LED headlights. The IIHS did not give the Blazer a "Top Safety Pick" rating due to its headlight performance.
