2022 Chevrolet Suburban vs 2023 Genesis GV80

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban carried forward the brand's full-size truck design language, which was introduced with its 2021 redesign. This SUV shared its exterior styling with the Tahoe and Silverado 1500, featuring a tall hood, long proportions, and large wheels that contributed to its supersized appearance. Our RST test vehicle, with its Cherry Red Tintcoat exterior and 22-inch bright-machined black-painted wheels, stood out with a sporty look, enhanced by a monochromatic black grille and RST-specific badging. Inside, the Suburban provided a spacious cabin ranging from economically comfortable in the base LS trim to plush in the High Country. The RST trim featured 10-way power seats, Jet Black perforated leather with Victory Red stitching, and an optional Luxury package, though the predominantly black interior felt a bit dark despite its open and airy design.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 exuded sophistication with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille, presenting a stately midsize SUV profile. Our Prestige trim tester featured 22-inch alloy wheels and a matte Brunswick Green paint job, adding to its elegant appearance. The quad lamp design continued in the rear with four-part taillamps above the dual exhaust. Inside, the dark green quilted leather seats complemented the metal and matte wood trim, while the center console was highlighted by three large dials for infotainment, transmission, and drive modes. The two-spoke steering wheel added a unique touch. Although the 14.5-inch infotainment screen seemed somewhat out of place atop the dash, the interior was spacious and luxurious, offering a comfortable environment for occupants.

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban offered three engine choices: a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 horsepower, a 6.2-liter V8 producing 420 hp, and a new 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six with 277 hp. All engines were paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The 6.2-liter V8, part of the Sport Performance package in our RST test vehicle, provided effortless power and acceleration, making it ideal for towing, with a maximum capacity of 8,300 pounds. The Suburban's independent rear suspension improved ride quality and increased cargo space, while the 4WD system with optional two-speed transfer case enhanced off-road capability.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 came with AWD and two engine options: a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 300 hp and a turbo 3.5-liter V6 producing 375 hp. Our tester featured the larger engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While not particularly quick, the GV80 excelled in highway driving, offering smooth power delivery and shifts. The electronically controlled suspension, combined with active noise cancellation, ensured a quiet and comfortable ride. However, the GV80's handling felt less precise compared to its German rivals.

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban boasted impressive interior space, accommodating up to nine passengers with the optional front-row bench seat. The third row offered adequate room for adults, and access was excellent. With 41.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 144.7 cubic feet with seats folded, the Suburban led its class in cargo capacity. The power-sliding center console and numerous storage cubbies added practicality, though its size made maneuvering in tight spaces challenging.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered luxury touches like heated and ventilated Nappa leather seats, a tri-zone climate control system, and a 21-speaker stereo. While a third row was available, its limited legroom made it suitable only for children. The GV80 featured a digital key and proximity key for convenience, and its cargo space was substantial, with 34.9 cubic feet behind the second row, expanding to 84 cubic feet with seats folded. Towing capacity was 6,000 pounds with trailer brakes.
