The KL-generation Cherokee launched as a 2014 model and almost immediately began swirling in controversy. Jeep hadn’t offered a Cherokee in the United States since the 2001 model year, when the XJ Cherokee disappeared, replaced by two generations of the Jeep Liberty.

There was great excitement for this all-new Jeep. Lots of fans were hoping for a redo of the 1984 to 2001 Jeep Cherokee that really helped to define the midsize SUV class with a unibody and legendary toughness. “The 2014 Cherokee feels planted on the road, more carlike than trucklike…” read an early review in Car and Driver. A separate review from the same publication read: “If you have eyes, you’ve noticed that this Cherokee, code-named KL, makes no design references, other than with the grille, to the iconic, rectilinear XJ Cherokee.”

But the automotive industry isn’t necessarily in the business of fueling nostalgia. It’s interested in what it can sell in great numbers in the future, not what people liked 30 years ago. And what we’ve realized over the years is that the Cherokee is really good at what it does, and it’s capable of doing a lot more than you’d expect.

Jeep sells these at a rate of 240,000 annually, in a good year. The best the Jeep Liberty it replaced ever managed was 166,883 units before dropping off the face of the Earth entirely. Clearly, Jeep knew something we didn’t when it released the Cherokee.

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee's styling features had mellowed since its debut. Initially, the very short grille opening and the swept-back headlights were controversial, but after seven years, it appeared better proportioned. The exterior appearance varied notably depending on the trim level chosen. The entry-level Latitude with 17-inch wheels and front-wheel drive (FWD) had a common look, reminiscent of rental cars. In contrast, the 80th Anniversary Edition, with 19-inch Granite Crystal wheels and painted lower body cladding, looked far more refined.

Jeep's design ingenuity with the roof was also commendable. While the Wrangler provided three different top options and the Renegade included a sliding top plus removable panels, the Cherokee offered an optional panoramic sunroof that spanned the entire roof surface. When in a crowded parking lot, the Cherokee stood out amidst a sea of crossover SUVs, bearing a strong resemblance to the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee, especially from the front.

The 2021 Honda Passport, on the other hand, was essentially a shorter version of the Pilot, foregone with two rows of seats instead of three. This design similarity was evident upon mere inspection. The Passport could almost be considered a Pilot Sport. This styling continuity continued inside as well, with the Passport's dashboard layout being visually identical to that of the Pilot. One downside shared by both models was Honda’s unusual “button shifter” design instead of a conventional lever for controlling the automatic transmission.

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee offered a trio of engines determined by the trim level. The base Latitude and Latitude Plus trims housed a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 180 horsepower.
