2021 INFINITI QX80 Reviews Summary

You might not expect Nissan’s luxury brand to make a hulking land yacht with globetrotting off-road capability, but that’s exactly what you get with the 2021 Infiniti QX80.

The QX80 is one of the last old-school SUVs, boasting body-on-frame construction and an available four-wheel drive (4WD) system with low range. It’s based on the Nissan Armada, which in turn is a rebadged version of the overseas-market Nissan Patrol—a legendary off-roader.

As a full-size luxury SUV based on a model from a mainstream brand, the QX80 follows the same formula as the Cadillac Escalade, Lexus LX 570, and Lincoln Navigator. In size, price, and prestige, it could also be considered a rival to the Land Rover Range Rover, BMW X7, and Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, but these SUVs have more modern unibody construction.

The QX80 gets some small updates for the 2021 model year, including an improved version of Infiniti’s Smart Rearview Mirror, and a reshuffled trim-level lineup, including base Luxe, midlevel Premium Select, and range-topping Sensory. Our test vehicle was a 4WD Sensory model.

In contrast, the 2022 GMC Yukon embraced chrome to stand out among its siblings, especially in the Denali trim, which featured a chrome-dominated front with a large grille. The Yukon offered a commanding presence, with C-shaped headlights and optional 22-inch wheels enhancing its bold look. Inside, the Yukon provided a spacious cabin with seating for up to nine, depending on the configuration. The Denali trim offered exclusive interior designs, adding a premium touch with contrasting colors and natural wood details. The AT4 trim, aimed at off-road enthusiasts, featured unique styling and practical off-road elements like a skid plate and recovery hooks.

The 2021 INFINITI QX80 was powered by a 5.6-liter V8 engine producing 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission. While the engine was responsive, the transmission shifts were less smooth. The QX80's body-on-frame construction, combined with independent suspension and Hydraulic Body Motion Control on Sensory models, provided a comfortable ride, though it struggled with body roll in corners. The QX80 excelled in towing, with a capacity of 8,500 pounds, and offered off-road capabilities with a 4WD option and standard skid plate, though its size and wheel options limited its off-road prowess.

The 2022 GMC Yukon offered three engine choices, including a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 horsepower, a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower, and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel with 277 horsepower but 460 pound-feet of torque. All engines were paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Yukon featured independent rear suspension, improving ride quality and handling, especially for third-row passengers. The Denali trim, with its 6.2-liter V8, provided ample power and an 8,200-pound tow rating.
