2021 Ford Bronco Sport Reviews Summary

After a long buildup, Ford finally made the 2021 Bronco Sport available for the media to test drive. The spunky compact two-row crossover SUV proved to be a lively, capable, and attractive companion for on- and off-pavement adventures.

2022 Toyota Sienna Reviews Summary

The 2022 Toyota Sienna hybrid minivan rolls into the second model year following a redesign for 2021. Last year’s successful makeover with a standard hybrid powertrain returns unchanged, but a new Woodland trim level is available to attract adventurous families (or those who want to look that way).

2021 Ford Bronco Sport

8/10

2022 Toyota Sienna

9/10

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport was a highly anticipated addition to the Ford lineup, designed as a smaller sibling to the rugged Bronco. It featured a modern retro aesthetic reminiscent of the Land Rover, with short front and rear overhangs for better off-road capability. The vehicle's tall fender wells and tucked-in body sides were tailored for trail driving, minimizing the risk of catching on obstructions. The Bronco Sport's front end echoed the larger Bronco, with bold white "BRONCO" lettering on the grille and tailgate, and a modest Ford blue oval badge on the tailgate. The SUV's wheels varied by trim level, ranging from 17-inch Sparkle Silver wheels on the Base model to 18-inch Ebony Black-painted wheels on the Outer Banks and Badlands models.

Inside, the Bronco Sport offered a rugged yet tasteful design, with an uncluttered layout and unique HVAC vent shapes. The center stack featured convenient storage cubbies and an 8-inch infotainment screen. The interior trim levels progressed from cloth seats to leather-trimmed, heated sport-contour bucket seats, and Navy Pier Leather power front seats on the First Edition. The cargo area was designed with practicality in mind, featuring a rubberized cargo floor and second-row seat protector, with options for carpeted floor mats and rubberized flooring.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna, continuing from its 2021 redesign, aimed to blend minivan practicality with SUV styling. It featured a macho front end and re-engineered sliding door hinges that concealed the slider channel below the rear side window frame. The rear doors had integrated styling details, and the overall profile was assertive with a nice stance. The Sienna came standard with 17-inch wheels, with options for 18-inch and 20-inch wheels on higher trims.

Inside, the Sienna avoided the typical minivan feel with an uncluttered front cabin design and ample storage throughout. The second and third rows offered comfortable, roomy seating, with available second-row captain’s chairs and a spacious three-across bench in the third row. The third-row bench was a 60/40-split that easily stored away into the floor. The second-row seats could slide up to 25 inches, facilitating easy access to the third row. The Sienna's interior was designed to accommodate a full 4x8 sheet of plywood with the tailgate closed, and it had a 3,500-pound towing capacity.

Performance

2021 Ford Bronco Sport

8/10

2022 Toyota Sienna

8/10

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport offered two engine choices tied to trim levels. The Base, Big Bend, and Outer Banks trims featured a 1.5-liter EcoBoost turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque. The Badlands and First Edition trims came with a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 245 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. All models had an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, along with a terrain management system with up to seven G.O.A.T. modes. The Bronco Sport excelled off-road, thanks to its short wheelbase, four-wheel independent suspension, and generous ground clearance. On-road, the 2.0-liter engine provided a better match for the vehicle's character, while the 1.5-liter engine could feel strained under pressure.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna came exclusively with a hybrid powertrain, combining a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors to produce 243 horsepower. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available on all trims. The AWD system used a separate electric motor for the rear wheels, adding 54 horsepower and 89 pound-feet of torque. The Sienna used an electronically controlled continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and offered four selectable drive modes. The TNGA platform provided better-than-expected handling for a minivan, with minimal body roll and comfortable highway cruising. The Sienna Hybrid boasted impressive fuel economy, with EPA ratings of 36 mpg city/highway/combined for FWD models and 35 mpg city/highway/combined for AWD models. The 288-volt nickel metal-hydride battery pack was tucked under the front seats and came with a 10-year/150,000-mile warranty.

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport catered to active buyers with features like cargo space designed to hold two 27.5-inch-wheel mountain bikes. Ford offered over 100 factory and aftermarket accessories for transporting outdoor gear. The roof could hold up to 150 pounds (100 with a moonroof), and the 2.0-liter engine could tow up to 2,200 pounds, while the 1.5-liter engine could tow 2,000 pounds. The cargo area included a flip-up rear glass, an optional cargo management package with a slide-out work table, a 400-watt inverter, and liftgate floodlamps. The front cabin had ample storage compartments, though taller drivers might find outward visibility challenging due to the roof overhang and hood bulges.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna was designed as a family workhorse, capable of carrying a full 4x8 sheet of plywood with the tailgate closed. The sliding second row added flexibility for loading cargo, with measurements of 33.5 cubic feet behind the third row, 75.2 cubic feet behind the second row, and 101 cubic feet behind the first row. The Sienna also had a 3,500-pound towing capacity. The standard 60/40-split third-row bench stored away easily, and each row had storage cubbies and cupholders. Both side sliding doors and the rear tailgate were power-operated with foot-motion triggers, providing convenience for families with full hands.

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport featured an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with SYNC 3, compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Ford+Alexa, and SiriusXM. FordConnect with 4G LTE WiFi hotspot was standard, and the base audio system included six speakers. Higher trims offered a Bang & Olufsen sound system and a 360-degree camera with split view and a washer. The terrain management system included five drive modes on lower trims and seven on higher trims, with trail control technology for off-roading. Intelligent access with push-button start was standard on all trims except the Base model, and higher trims included heated and leather-wrapped steering wheels and a 6.5-inch digital instrument panel.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna came with a 9-inch touchscreen standard on all trims, featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM, and multiple USB ports. However, it lacked wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Sienna included a one-year trial of Safety Connect and Remote Connect, a 10-year trial of Service Connect, and a three-month trial of AT&T WiFi Connect. Higher trims offered Qi wireless phone charging and a 1500-watt inverter with a 120-volt AC outlet. Audio systems ranged from a six-speaker setup on the LE to a 12-speaker JBL system on higher trims. A rear-seat entertainment system was available, featuring an 11.6-inch 1080p display. The instrument panel included a color multi-information display, with a 10-inch head-up display on Platinum trims. Limited and Platinum models could upgrade to a digital rearview mirror.
