2021 Acura TLX vs 2020 Subaru WRX

The 2020 Subaru WRX, originally a performance variant of the Subaru Impreza, evolved into its own model by 2015. By 2020, it retained its aggressive styling with a wider stance, lower front splitter, rear deck spoiler, and a large functional air intake. The WRX STI version took it further with a large rear wing and additional aerodynamic components. Despite its sporty exterior, the non-STI version could be a sleeper, surprising those unfamiliar with its performance capabilities. The cabin, however, was considered somewhat pedestrian for a new car in 2021. Trim levels included Base, Premium, and Limited, each offering various features from 17-inch alloy wheels and a 6.5-inch touchscreen in the Base trim to leather upholstery and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat in the Limited trim. The WRX STI added even more with 19-inch alloy wheels, leather-and-suede upholstery, and advanced safety features.

The 2021 Acura TLX stood out in the crowded sporty sedan class with its assertive stance, steeply raked windshield, fastback-style roofline, and integrated tail spoiler. The front grille, with its pattern radiating from the Acura logo, and the jewel eye LED headlights added to its bold look. Twin trapezoidal tailpipes and top-notch paint quality further enhanced its premium feel. Inside, the TLX featured a "sport sedan cockpit" with authentic materials like metal, leather, and wood. The 10.2-inch infotainment screen was neatly integrated, providing a modern and functional design. The attention to detail in the TLX's interior was evident, with tight gaps, matching fonts, and a visually appealing layout.

The 2020 Subaru WRX was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer-four engine, producing 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It came with a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional CVT. The manual transmission provided a 50:50 front:rear torque distribution, while the CVT offered a 45:55 split. The WRX's power delivery was impressive, with minimal turbo lag and precise steering, making it a joy to drive on winding roads. The WRX STI version featured a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine with 310 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque, along with Brembo brakes and a stiffer suspension for even sharper handling. However, the ride was notably stiff, especially on imperfect roads, and road and wind noise were significant.

The 2021 Acura TLX featured a new turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine, delivering 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. It came with a 10-speed automatic transmission and offered front-wheel drive as standard, with Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) available. The TLX's Integrated Dynamics System allowed for distinct driving modes, including Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Individual, adjusting parameters like throttle response and steering. The TLX's handling was nimble and balanced, with a solid feel over various road surfaces. At a launch event in Michigan, the TLX demonstrated its sprightly character and inspiring handling, particularly in Sport mode, which reduced turbo lag and enhanced the exhaust note.

The 2020 Subaru WRX offered excellent visibility with its simple sedan layout, large windshield, and slanted hood. The cabin featured a straightforward dash layout with easy-to-use controls and ample storage. The first-row seating provided plenty of head- and legroom, while the rear seats were adequate for adults on short trips. However, the 12 cubic feet of cargo space was limited compared to other compact sedans but comparable to sports cars.

The 2021 Acura TLX benefited from performance decisions that improved its form and function. The shift-by-wire transmission allowed for a reimagined center console, featuring a control panel modeled after the NSX, paddle shifters, and a mini touchpad for infotainment control. The front seats offered 12-way power adjustability and were available with perforated Milano leather. The rear seats were comfortable for two adults, with adequate head- and legroom. The trunk provided 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space, with a wide opening and good depth.

The 2020 Subaru WRX came standard with a 6.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, upgradeable to a 7-inch screen. The Starlink infotainment system included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the digital display in the instrument panel and atop the dash provided key driver information.

The 2021 Acura TLX was loaded with technology, including drive-by-wire, shift-by-wire, and SH-AWD. The 10-speed automatic transmission featured Grade Logic Control, Shift Hold Control, and Cornering G Shift Control. The TLX also offered ambient interior lighting, a 17-speaker ELS Studio 3D audio system, and a head-up display. The infotainment system included navigation, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, SMS Text Messaging, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

The 2020 Subaru WRX came standard with front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. The optional EyeSight suite included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. The WRX earned top marks from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.

The 2021 Acura TLX included the AcuraWatch suite with adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist. Additional safety features included a pedestrian injury mitigation design, ACE body structure, ultra-high-strength steel front door stiffener rings, and a full complement of airbags. The TLX also offered rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system. The 2021 TLX had not yet been tested by the IIHS or NHTSA, but previous models received high ratings.
