The test car reviewed came with SL trim, front-drive, the SL Premium Package, carpeted floor and cargo mats, and a first-aid kit, totaling $34,870, including a $1,095 destination charge. Despite its age, the Rogue maintained an attractive appearance, highlighted by its bold V-Motion grille and 19-inch aluminum wheels. However, the interior design showed its age with older styling themes and unimpressive plastic surfaces. The padded center console sides were a thoughtful touch for driver comfort.

In contrast, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS, part of the third generation introduced in 2020, carried over with a more modern and svelte design. The GLS featured softened angles and lines, making it appear less bulky than its predecessors. Inside, the GLS boasted a futuristic cabin with a massive digital screen spanning nearly two-thirds of the dashboard, emphasizing its tech-reliant controls. Available in GLS 450, GLS 580, and the high-performance AMG GLS 63, the GLS offered a range of luxurious features, including remote keyless entry, nine USB ports, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 13-speaker Burmester premium sound system. The AMG GLS 63 stood out with aggressive bodywork, quad-outlet exhaust, and a performance-inspired interior.

The 2020 Nissan Rogue was powered by a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Weighing up to 3,671 pounds, the Rogue's powertrain was adequate but not sporty, even with a Sport driving mode. The CVT managed the power well, but the Rogue struggled during freeway acceleration, passing, and climbing grades, often responding with noise rather than action. The EPA estimated 29 mpg in combined driving for FWD versions, but testing revealed a disappointing 24.9 mpg. The Rogue's ride and handling were improved by Intelligent Trace Control and Active Ride Control, but it lacked fun-to-drive dynamics due to lifeless steering and occasional CVT drone.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered more robust performance options. The entry-level GLS 450 featured a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The GLS 580 upgraded to a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 with 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Both models used a nine-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. The GLS 63 featured an adaptive air suspension system, multiple drive modes, and E-Active Body Control for a composed ride and precise handling, even on rough roads.

The 2020 Nissan Rogue's interior space was a mixed bag. The front seats, though featuring Nissan's Zero Gravity cushion designs, were somewhat undersized and difficult to adjust for taller drivers. The back seat, however, offered excellent thigh support, a proper backrest angle, and a great view, enhanced by the panoramic glass sunroof. Rear passengers enjoyed air conditioning vents and USB charging ports. Cargo space was a strong point, with 39 cubic feet behind the back seat, underfloor storage compartments, and a Divide-n-Hide cargo management system.

The driver and front passenger had plenty of storage options, including spacious in-door bins and a combination cup-holder/wireless-charging pad. The center console, though not large enough for a purse, offered additional storage.

The 2020 Nissan Rogue's infotainment system included Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a hands-free text messaging assistant. Upgrades included SiriusXM satellite radio, navigation, a Bose premium sound system, and NissanConnect Services with features like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and remote access. However, the 7-inch touchscreen was outdated, with slow response times and subpar voice-recognition technology, diminishing the overall tech experience.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the advanced MBUX infotainment system with a massive touch screen and a simple trackpad. It included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though requiring a USB-C cable. The MBUX voice-control system responded to "Hey Mercedes" and could understand complex commands.
