2020 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

According to a Harvard Business Review marketing study, there is such a thing as too much choice. And when the marketplace presents consumers with too much choice, there is a chance they won’t buy anything at all.

For the 2020 model year, there are more than 40 small or compact SUVs available, half of them sold by luxury brands. Small and scrappy Mazda offers three of them: the CX-3, the CX-30, and the CX-5. However, in a marketplace awash in Chevys, Fords, Hondas, and Toyotas, Mazda has trouble standing apart from the established crowd.

What’s the solution? Move upscale into “premium” territory.

Premium is where Buick, Fiat, GMC, Jeep, Mini, and Volkswagen play to varying levels of success. Combining the value inherent in a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology common to luxury brands, these premium vehicles attempt to provide more than mainstream for less than luxury.

At the same time, less is more. Because the 2020 Mazda CX-5 has but four similarly sized competitors in the premium class, that makes it easier for a consumer to choose, and more likely that a consumer will buy. The trick is convincing people that Mazda is a premium brand, and the automaker is taking a pragmatic approach to this emotionally-charged solution.

2021 Mazda CX-30 Reviews Summary

Blurring the lines between mainstream and luxury brands, the new 2021 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo pairs effortless acceleration and engaging driving dynamics with a premium design and impressive technologies. Despite its substantial boost in power, this small crossover SUV isn’t about hardcore performance. Rather, it’s about delivering equal parts confidence, capability, style, and satisfaction, and at a price that stops where the traditional luxury brands are just getting started.

Look and feel

2020 Mazda CX-5

9/10

2021 Mazda CX-30

7/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 was a testament to Mazda's commitment to premium quality, offering more than just a claim of luxury. This model year saw enhancements in standard equipment, cabin aesthetics, and noise reduction, alongside a turbocharged engine with increased torque. The CX-5's design, rooted in the "Kodo" styling theme, remained appealing and upscale, with the Signature trim featuring premium Nappa leather and real wood accents. However, the interior's Caturra Brown leather lacked contrast, slightly diminishing its premium feel.

In contrast, the 2021 Mazda CX-30 2.5 Turbo embraced a bold design with shiny black elements and matte black cladding, giving it a distinct appearance. Despite its shared styling themes with the Mazda3 hatchback, the CX-30 stood taller, offering a unique driving experience. Inside, the cabin mirrored the Mazda3's quality materials and textures, with a few updates like a chrome accent and frameless rearview mirror. The CX-30 Turbo's pricing ranged from $31,000 to $35,000, with the test vehicle priced at $35,745, including destination charges.

2021 Mazda CX-30

7/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 offered a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive optional. The Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trims featured a turbocharged engine, delivering up to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium fuel. Despite its 3,825-pound curb weight, the CX-5 Signature accelerated confidently, though its fuel efficiency was lower, averaging 22.1 mpg. The SUV's G-Vectoring Control Plus technology enhanced driving engagement, but excessive body motions detracted from its thrill.

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo, equipped with a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, offered between 227 and 250 horsepower, depending on fuel octane. Its six-speed automatic transmission and i-Activ AWD system provided smooth acceleration, with a combined fuel economy of 25 mpg. The CX-30 Turbo's GVC-Plus technology and i-Activ AWD managed torque distribution effectively, though its added height and weight impacted handling compared to the Mazda3. The SUV's Off-Road mode and ground clearance made it suitable for light off-road adventures, but its on-road performance was less engaging for driving enthusiasts.

Form and function

2021 Mazda CX-30

7/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 aimed to compete with luxury SUVs by offering an upscale interior, though it was more cramped than mainstream competitors like the Honda CR-V. The CX-5's interior featured stylish gauges and metallic accents, with higher trims adding comfort features like dual-zone climate control and heated seats. The Signature trim boasted Nappa leather and wood trim, but rear legroom was limited. Cargo space measured 30.9 cubic feet, expanding to 59.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo provided exceptional comfort for the driver, with eight-way power adjustment and heated front seats. However, the front passenger seat lacked adjustability, and ventilated seats were unavailable. The cabin's minimalist design and quality materials created a spacious feel, though rear-seat space was cramped. The CX-30 offered 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 45.2 cubic feet with the seats folded. The optional wireless charger location limited storage options in the center console.

Technology

2021 Mazda CX-30

8/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 featured a Mazda Connect infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen in Sport trim, expanding to an 8-inch display in higher trims. The system included Bluetooth, HD Radio, and Apple CarPlay, with a Bose sound system and navigation available in Grand Touring and Signature trims. However, the system's controls were not intuitive, and voice recognition was limited.

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo's 8.8-inch infotainment display was not a touchscreen, relying on center console and steering wheel controls. While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, the system's operation was cumbersome. Premium trims added a Bose audio system and navigation, with an Active Driving Display providing useful data. The CX-30 also offered Mazda Connected Services and a WiFi hotspot trial.

The SUV also featured LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers, with adaptive headlights available in higher trims.

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo also received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and five-star ratings from the NHTSA, except for a four-star rollover resistance rating.
