Despite these figures, the engine was loud, slow, and fuel-thirsty, with a test average of 23.1 mpg, below the EPA rating. The nine-speed automatic transmission often shifted harshly, and the auto stop/start system was intrusive. The Compass's suspension managed body roll well but allowed too much vertical motion, and the steering was heavy and vague. However, the Compass excelled off-road, especially in the Trailhawk trim, offering capabilities that few competitors could match.
