The Acura MDX is the best-selling three-row luxury SUV of all time, with solid performances through three generations of production since 2001. While it may not be an industry leader in any one category, the MDX delivers competitive levels of comfort, convenience, and technology and an attractive overall package that has spawned a loyal repeat audience.

2020 INFINITI QX80 Reviews Summary

There’s no two ways around it. The Infiniti QX80 is the more luxurious fraternal twin of the Nissan Armada. Over the past few years, the brands have worked harder to differentiate the two models and with luxurious accommodations, the QX80 feels head and shoulders above the similarly-sized Armada.

Look and feel

2020 Acura MDX

6/10

2020 INFINITI QX80

7/10

The 2020 Acura MDX was an attractive, if not particularly eye-catching, crossover SUV. It featured sleek and low-slung styling with chiseled details and a fast roofline, exhibiting Acura's knack for flawless paint and chrome finishes. The signature Jewel Eye headlights added a touch of sophistication to the front, with their horizontal array of five LED elements per side flanking the trapezoidal grille. Inside, the MDX presented a modern and understated design. The dual infotainment screens on the center stack were practical and intuitive, while high-quality materials and excellent fit and finish made the cabin feel solid and well-built.

Meanwhile, the 2020 INFINITI QX80 boasted a more commanding and luxurious presence. This flagship SUV featured an array of modern exterior details, including welcome lights, power-folding mirrors, LED fog lights, and taillights, and an adaptive front lighting system. Inside, the cabin offered three interior color schemes—Wheat, Graphite, and Saddle Brown—and the Limited-grade models included matte silver and open-pore Ash wood trim. Despite improved materials, some interior trim pieces didn't quite match up to competitors. The dual-screen infotainment system looked updated and sleek, though it featured piano-black plastic that easily attracted fingerprints.

Performance

2020 Acura MDX

6/10

2020 INFINITI QX80

8/10

The 2020 Acura MDX came with a choice between a naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, and a hybrid variant featuring a 3.0-liter V6 combined with three electric motors delivering a total of 321 horsepower and 289 pound-feet of torque. The gasoline-only model, equipped with Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), showcased impressive straight-line performance and nimble handling, thanks largely to its torque-vectoring technology. The nine-speed automatic transmission provided smooth shifts, adapting well to various driving modes, and the four-wheel independent suspension delivered a comfortable ride.

In comparison, the 2020 INFINITI QX80 was powered by a robust 5.6-liter V8 engine producing 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission. Although the QX80 accomplished smooth acceleration, the downshifts were sometimes noticeable and less refined than its competitors. The SUV’s fuel inefficiency was a drawback, with RWD models getting 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway, while 4WD variants offered even lower figures. However, the QX80 excelled in off-road capabilities, facilitated by its Hydraulic Body Motion Control system and multiple drive modes. Steering at low speeds was manageable, but highway driving required constant adjustment.

Form and function

2020 INFINITI QX80

8/10

The 2020 Acura MDX provided practical versatility in response to the needs of families. With sliding and reclining second-row seats, accessing the third row was straightforward. The MDX offered 15.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, which expanded to 43.4 cubic feet when the third row was folded flat, and a generous 90.9 cubic feet with all rear seats down. Interior storage solutions included a large glovebox, center console bin, door pockets, and cupholders across all rows. Tri-zone climate control enhanced comfort for all passengers.

In contrast, the 2020 INFINITI QX80 had a plush and spacious first and second row but a tighter third row, suitable mainly for children. Standard seating for seven was provided via second-row captain’s chairs, with an optional bench seat. The SUV's leather-appointed seats could be upgraded to semi-aniline leather upholstery. Cargo capacity was notable with 16.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 49.6 cubic feet behind the second row, and a maximum of 95.1 cubic feet with seats folded. The QX80 also included a power liftgate for convenience.

Technology

2020 INFINITI QX80

7/10

The 2020 Acura MDX integrated technology features through its various packages. The base model featured essential tech such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an eight-speaker audio system. The Technology Package added elements like rain-sensing wipers, LED puddle lights, and navigation with real-time traffic. The Advance Package further included features like a surround-view camera system and heated rear seats. Opting for the Entertainment Package added a rear-seat entertainment system and additional speakers.

The 2020 INFINITI QX80 came standard with dual touch screens, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, satellite radio, and a 13-speaker Bose stereo system. Upgrades could include a rear-seat entertainment system, a WiFi hotspot, and a 17-speaker Bose system. SiriusXM services with a complimentary trial enhanced real-time information access. Although functional and responsive, the infotainment system lacked a modern design compared to competitors.

Safety

2020 INFINITI QX80

7/10

The safety suite for the 2020 Acura MDX included adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking as part of the standard AcuraWatch package. The Technology Package added blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Acura’s ACE Body Structure aimed to absorb impact energy and enhance occupant safety, resulting in high IIHS and NHTSA safety ratings.

The 2020 INFINITI QX80, despite being an older model, offered standard safety features such as automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and a surround-view camera. Optional driver-assist features included adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist. With “good” IIHS ratings in select categories and moderate NHTSA ratings, the QX80 provided reasonable safety assurance.
