Write a reviewThe 2008 Impala stays largely unchanged from 2007, adding satellite radio as standard on all models, and defines "plain vanilla" among full-sized, front-wheel-drive sedans. A touch of "green" sprouts in the 3.9-liter V6, standard on the LTZ line, which is E85 ethanol-gasoline compatible. But vanilla sells. Chevy sold 290,000 Impalas in 2006, ranking it the seventh best selling vehicle in the U.S.
The Impala line, which originated in 1958, has a performance heritage that still finds expression in the Impala SS trim, which fields a 303-hp, 5.3-liter V8. The new green streak appears even in this performance line, via GM's Active Fuel Management technology, which shuts down half the cylinders during highway cruising to boost fuel economy. Yet the SS still performs well, drilling the 0-60-mph run in 6.4 seconds. Most of those impressive sales figures, however, represent one of the lesser engine choices, with the V6 engines offering up to 28 mpg highway, according to the EPA.
The base LS model rolls on 16-inch wheels, with front bench seating, full power accessories, a power driver seat, tilt steering wheel, keyless entry, and a CD audio system with MP3 jack. A functional but plain interior suits the overall presentation of the Impala. The automotive press finds that the Hyundai Azera represents a better mix of luxury and value, the Toyota Avalon has more refinement, and the Chrysler 300 offers more agility and style. Yet none of them matches the sales figures of the Impala.
So why is the Impala so popular? As an inexpensive, economical people mover, it can seat six adults - try that in any of the aforementioned competitors. The Impala also does well in crash testing. The LTZ and SS lines include standard antilock brakes and traction control, which are optional on other trims. Standard on all Impalas are full-length side curtain airbags, tire pressure monitors, and an OnStar system. 2LT, LTZ, and SS trims feature standard stability control.
While the SS understandably stands out in handling, the rest of the line, when equipped with the stock soft front-wheel-drive suspension, does not. Overall, the standard Impala represents a competent highway cruiser that comfortably and efficiently hauls six adults.

I just had this issue where I started my 2008 Chevy Impala LT and it wouldnt go into gear so I turned it off put it pack in park but then wouldnt start. Tested battery, alternator, all wires and fuses, nothing changed. Pushed the release on the side of the gearshift inside the car found out my shift linkage clip was missing and was causing my car not to go into gear. Also, it wouldnt read correctly what position it was in. The clip being broken off was making my gearshift unable to work. Also there was a loose ground wire we tightened it and replaced the clip on the gearshift and BOOM MY CAR STARTED RIGHT UP. I was so THANKFUL. Before u spend ALOT of money trust me Im a tiny lil female but, I thought, Ima try and see and U tube has ALOT of Great helpful videos and so far its saved me thousands of dollars in car repairs. Before u throw alot of money out, just check online it may also save you!!! May 16, 2022

The car is pretty good when taking off but do to its 3.5L engine it lacks the ability to take off with power and efficiency, it doesn't give that big shot of adrenaline that other cars could. I know it's a 6 cylinder car but still chevy should have added a little more to these V6 engines.Feb 16, 2013

Over all, I love it. The only problem is that the rear passenger side warps even after the caliper has been replaced twice. Also, it has plenty of room for passengers and a huge trunk. The car also has a sleek outside.

I owned a 2008 Impala, named Rosy. She drove wonderful, handled great and was the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I personally would still have this vehicle if it wasn't totaled by some random driver at 2:30am while parked on the street.

recent problem surfaced. service traction control, service stabilitrac, harder shift first and second gear. Dealer dumbfounded. Just got my 08 Impala SS, and I'm loving it. The performance is excellent, the 5.3 V8 really moves this family sedan. I would have preferred a rear wheel drive V8, the front wheel drive takes some getting used to when you put the pedal down, but very fun 2 drive.Mar 09, 2011

overall spacious interior and trunk, although it could use more rear legroom and larger trunk opening. I like the front floor space of a three passenger seat. The engine has good acceleration and handles reasonable for everyday driving. Despite what most say, the build quality is good. The mode selector on the HVAC control could be designed so that it is easy to tell which mode one selects. For a full-size car this car gets good fuel economy especially on the highway. It would be good if Anti-Lock Brakes came standard on all models, on the other hand there is more underhood space, so it is easier to do maintenance especially doing brake fluid exchange. Big passenger area and big trunk, good power and fuel economy - The front bench seat was so comfortable that I don't think I could get up. Pickup is very good for a 211 Horsepower 3.5L V6. As far I had heard about bad reviews on Goodyear Integrity on 16" wheels, the ride and handling did not seem too bad at all. The used vehicle from Hendrick Chevrolet / Cadillac has the tires filled with Nitrogen. I am not sure if that may have improved the tire performance from those Goodyears. It has got a trip computer, oil life monitor, remote engine starting. However no Onstar and not E85 compatible. The build quality when I test drove the vehicle was good. I don't care what people say!
On the flip side without ABS, brake servicing would be easier and no expensive parts to worry about replacing. In the future, I would plan on swapping out the back seats for ones that can fold down.Jan 08, 2011

I think this car is a damn good investment and honestly i dont have to add anything to it performance wise its a 3.5 so no matter what ill go. I thinnk this car is extremely fun to drive and is very smooth. My top reason i love to drive this car is that i get from A to B as quick or as slow as i like. My bottom line is i reccomend people buy this car because the only thing you have to do is change the oil and brakes other then that the car has very minimal issues.Jul 31, 2010

nice car to drive, good acceleration and road feel. repeated issues with tire pressure monitoring/reporting system, having replaced 3 valve stems, still get a message every few days to 'service tire monitor system', which fortunately ususally goes away with no action on my part. Also have replaced the front hubs and hub replacement units also which hummedwhen installed new. I drive it pretty hard, (120k miles) all over TN, car still looks good, very affordable road tool, given low up front, but should be more reliable/dependable. Good gas mileage, 24-25 combined driving. Reasonably fun to drive, best michelins(aquatreads?) make a bid difference.Jun 27, 2010

The amount of throttle response to handling response it amazing. I have two children that fit comfortably in spacious rear seats. The comfort of overall ride for a car with its build is better than avaerage. I switched from a 2005 Monte Carlo SS 3.8L to this 2008 impala ss 5.3L WOW is it twice the car all the way around. The only thing that i disliked about the impala ss is the grille in front w/plates covering. I pulled my plates off and inserted a billet stainless grilee. I sell aftermarket items for all veh. I was impressed with the amount of options availible for the car, Between Style, and Performance!!!!May 17, 2010

Performance - very good for base engine
Build quality - I have had two of the new style impalas and they both
have started having suspension noise around 40-50k, 1st car was tie
rod end and I have not ben able to locate source of clunk in rear when
going over bumps in the road, very annoying.
Cost - I feel this is a great car for the money and have been very
impressed with the gas mileage and average 30-33mpg in the

Repaced the tires at 45,000 miles with Michelin Harmony tires. Routine maintenance. I average 32 MPG HWY, 27 MPG CITY. Quiet, comfortable, roomy, excellent handling. I've owned over 30+ vehicles, and this is truly one of the best. Flex fuel if it were available to be bought, however no "green", yellow, red, or blue oil company sells e-85 anywhere I've been through out the midwest, southeast, northeast, mid-atlantic that I can find anywhere.Dec 27, 2009

Bought it used with 16K miles. Was pleasantly surprised; very smooth ride and an average of 27mpg/32mpg on highway. Performance are ok but a little slow to accelerate from complete stop. Just took the car on a 700 mile road trip. What a horrible car! Sure, it goes fast, but it doesn't hold the lane well, turns like a truck, has outdated controls, uncomfortable seats, and lacks basics like even a thermometer. I hated this car. I loveeeee my new car. I've had it about a month, and I just love it so much!! It rides well, has a great stereo system with XM radiio and On Star. I picked Silver Metallic color and Black for the Interior. This car has the "Flex Fuel" option. You can put that E-84 or whatever that Ethanol fuel is called, but I've not tried that yet. This dash code came up, "ENGINE HOT AC OFF" My dash engine thermometer went to 0. My coolant level looks ok, I also don't believe my engine is hot at all. 08 Impala when backing out of my drive way, car made aloud clicking noise and wouldn't allow me to go forward or reverse. The screen said will not allow speed in excess of 107. We think that it may just be that the speed sensor needs replaced. Any other ideas?
