America's muscle sedan brings something for almost everybody.
Since relaunching the Charger name as a modern 4-door sedan for 2006, Dodge has continued its streak of building aggressive-looking cars with big engines. Very few changes are in store for the 2008 model year. Most notable is a better-quality interior.

Is any sedan more brash, menacing, or silly than a Dodge Charger? There's something refreshing about designing an average family sedan to be obnoxiously aggressive and not care so much about the many people who won't think of buying one. But that's Dodge—and its doing well by it. The wide crossed grille and dark-tinted headlights appear to be snorting and squinting. The tall body panels and slim glass create a chopped roof effect like those of 1930s hot rods. When dressed in bright colors, 20-inch rims, spoilers, and silly decals, the Charger isn't just a poseur—it's a doer, and it'll do loud, fast, and dumb things all day. Can't say that about a Camry or a Fusion.
The interior is a bare-bones warehouse that's been upgraded with (some) softer materials for 2008. Hard cheap plastics still prevail, and it's an ugly space by any measure. But being seen in a Charger is what counts, because nothing else on the road looks like it. The police love the intimidating looks so much they're buying them straight from Dodge as factory cruisers.

Based on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class from the 1990s, the Charger and its clones (the Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300) are an American-German mashup from the short-lived DaimlerChrysler era. That means good solid bones from expensive luxury cars, including the suspension components and certain transmissions. Disregard the base Charger SE and its 2.7-liter V6, which has only 178 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque to move a heavy car. The 3.5-liter V6 and the 4-speed automatic are the better pair on the SE Plus and SXT, with 250 hp and 250 lb-ft. That would be enough for most people, but the better Charger models aren't for most people.
Those are the R/T and Daytona R/T, which pack a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 340 hp (350 on the Daytona), 390 lb-ft of torque, and a 5-speed automatic. All-wheel drive (AWD) is optional on the V8 R/T and V6 SXT; all other trims are rear-wheel drive (RWD). To reach peak Charger, you must buy the SRT8 and brace for a 6.1-liter V8 with 425 hp and 420 lb-ft. The SRT8 also comes with Brembo brakes, 20-inch summer tires, and a stiffer suspension. Yes, it's loud. The ride on any Charger falls on the stiff side, and their weight and imprecise steering make them feel like the 1960s muscle cars they really are.
Fuel economy is estimated at 18 mpg city, 26 highway, and 21 combined for the 2.7-liter V6. The 3.5-liter V6 with either transmission is 17/24/20 (with AWD, it's 15/22/18). The R/T AWD returns the same mileage (with the RWD V8 being 15/23/18). On EPA tests, that's because the V8 can shut off half its cylinders under light loads. Don't believe that kind of fuel efficiency will ever happen in real life with an engine that huge. The biggest 6.1-liter will drain the tank at a rate of 13/18/15.

What's helpful about the Charger's terrible interior is that there's nothing at all nice to distract you. The blue-tinted gauges are the best part, and the optional Uconnect system incorporating the stereo and navigation is easy to use. So are the climate controls, which look pulled out of a commercial Ram truck. To make matters worse is the roof. No one approaching six feet is ever comfortable in the back seat, and as a driver, you can't really see out the back. The 16 cubic feet of space in the trunk is good. Dodge just hopes you'll be driving too fast to notice how poorly made and designed it is inside.

The base Charger has air conditioning, a four-speaker CD stereo, cloth seats, 17-inch steel wheels, power windows/mirrors/locks, cruise control, and remote keyless entry. Good, but avoid it unless there are options that include 18-inch wheels, Bluetooth, satellite radio, a power driver's seat, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The SE Plus has the better engine, plus alloy wheels and disc brakes. Things get cushier with the SXT, which is one of the few cars on sale with power-adjustable pedals. It also comes with an upgraded stereo and heated mirrors. More SXT options include 18-inch wheels, heated leather seats, dual-zone climate, Boston Acoustics stereo, auto headlights, navigation, moonroof, and an onboard hard drive for storing music called MyGIG. New for 2008 is a rear entertainment package that lets people crammed in back play a movie, should they have to sit there for 2 hours.
The R/T can be equipped with a trip computer, remote start, illuminated cupholders, and microsuede seat inserts. The SRT8 is available with a subwoofer and surround sound.

The 2008 Charger comes with dual front airbags and ABS as standard. Traction and stability control are standard on all trims except the SE, where they're optional when the SE is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes. Front side airbags and front and rear head curtain airbags are optional on every trim. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not tested the Charger but applies scores from the Chrysler 300. Since they are two separate cars with entirely different body panels, CarGurus will not report these tests as applicable. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rated the 2008 Charger five out of five stars for the driver and passenger in a frontal crash, four stars for the driver in a side crash, and five stars for the rear passenger in a side crash.

The 2008 Dodge Charger starts at $21,350 for the SE. Other popular trims include the $28,035 SXT AWD and $30,755 R/T RWD. The SRT8 bases at a $36,355 minimum. The Charger is crude and cheap-feeling inside, but its performance and exterior style are way past the competition. Add in the availability of AWD and impressive tech options, and there's some good value in this bonkers Dodge sedan.

I have had my Charger for 14 years; I was the first to drive it on the lot, and have loved it ever since. It gets well used ;) I have had no major issues with the car, I have always taken great care of it and done all needed maintenance. The car and engine are die hard, and it never lets me down!! The reported issues on other sites; such as the water pump, steering, starting were not issues I have ever had; the water pump just started to go recently at 318,000. Just an example that taking good care of your car can make a huge difference! Other complaints Ive read are handling, and visibility. I think the people making those comments are just not overly versed in how to properly drive this model of car, it drives and handles amazing!! Especially in the winter; if you have a good set of winters on it, you can go anywhere. And I dont find I have any blind spots, especially if you set all the mirrors just right. Mine has had its day though, trying to find one in decent condition to replace it. Wish Dodge didnt change the exterior shape, I love the look of this model over the new ones; so I wont buy a newer model. Only complaints would be the faux leather; my driver seat and arm rest are badly cracked and split, and you will see that in all of the Chargers this age. Apr 18, 2023

The Hemi Orange paint job, 20 inch chrome rims and nasty looking blackout accents let everyone else know I'm coming, This car is a family sedan that's also a sports car when you need it. There are so many things I love about this car. Plenty of room when traveling. Lots of trunk and cabin space. Handles great and gets about 430 mpg on the highway on trips. In the city it gets about 28 - 30 mpg. I love this car it was a great investment.Jan 06, 2015

I have had the car for 102000 miles at this point.. Car has been good. No real issues to speak of just general maintenance items. Car gets about 17 miles to the gallon if your nice... 14 if you have fun... and 19 on the Highway... I don't like MDS so I have it disabled. I have gotten as much as 24 on the highway with it working but just can't handle the sound it produces a low growl of 4 cylinder it also causes the car to pulse as it turns on and off when needed... just not worth it to me. If you are going to drive this kind of car and change the exhaust MDS is not an option... This is a straight line machine the curves is just all under steer.. like crazy! It will just push it self into a corner you have to do alot of breaking while turning to change weight to the front tires and then give gas to get out of it... Fun to toss around once you get the hang of it... A trick for all Chargers 07-09 I think while car is moving above 5 miles an hour just turn the key fob and hold.. .your traction control light will turn on and it will disable all traction control.... As stated above, the HEMI power is just smile inducing. The comfort that this car exudes on the roads, whether it be light to light or open highway is amazing. The gadgetry in the cockpit leaves you feeling like James Bond as you cycle radio stations with either the steering wheel controls or the MyGIG touch screen. The heated seats shake off the bitter cold in the winters and the sunroof lets you bask in those sunny summer days. This car turns heads at the grocery stores or whatever other family duties you may encounter, but lets you chuckle when you slam the accelerator and feel the car jump up and go. I have few gripes with this vehicle. Mainly the heaviness and bodyroll, but any visit to performance shop can cure those ailments!Mar 25, 2014

good on gas ,did a record run of 710k on one tank .Traction control sucks in deep snow. Not bad get up and go for size and engine (3.5l)High kick down release at around 140, good for passing on the high way.

Torque-monster. Rated at 350hp, this is a perfect street car. Amazingly fun to drive. Has enough power and acceleration to put a smile on anyone's face on the street and has potential for track uses. Car needs a few things to get it to break out of its shell. It doesn't breathe well and needs air in/out as well as a PCM tuner. Though the aforementioned mods did not contribute much power at all, they did however radically change the way the car drove. The suspension and brakes are a little lacking compared to the SRT, but unless you're autocrossing you probably don't need anything better than stock. Car looks gorgeous but rides a little high at stock height. Gas mileage is around 17mph on 93 octane after tune. Stock rotors are terrible; had them replaced at 10K miles under warranty. On that note, the lifetime warranty is nothing short of amazing.Sep 01, 2009

I bought this car with 300 miles on it due to a lot of people wanting to test drive it without intending on buying it. My wife fell in love with it because of it's power and quickness. Before the charger we bought an 03 Impala and it is a V6 so it doesn't have that HEMI power. The charger gets better gas mileage than I expected. I drove it across the country and from California to Wisconsin my total was about $300 for gas. I was expecting the total to be around $500 or greater. Performance - let the 350 horsepower, 5.7 liter hemi speak for itself, along with the amazing handling that comes with a beefed up steering and suspension. The ride on huge 20" inch rims is amazingly smooth.
Cost of ownership - with 16 mpg in the city and 20 on the highway, this is quite nice. =D
Appearance - let your jaw hit the floor, because this is one of the most beautiful cars out there
Fun factor - no matter what speed you're cruising at, this car is pure fun 100% of the time

Performance.
Braking: the brake requires a little pressure but it responds very well.
Handling: the handling is a bit left to be desired but once you get used to the way it turns and the size of the car it really isn't too bad.
Acceleration: Amazing especially if you're using the autostick function 0 to 60 in 5.1 sec.
Build Quality: SOLID ALL AMERICAN MUSCLE built like a brick house, wouldn't have it any other way.

My 2008 Dodge Charger sometimes wont start and sometimes wont shift.
Took my car to the dealership they thought they fixed it of course as i'm leaving it wouldn't start. So they showed me how to start it. You have to pop the hood then press on a little block located on the passenger side closest to the windsheild. It's the Computer PCM. And sometimes when I get it started If there are a bunch of lights on such as the ABS light the or the ESP/BAS light it's not going to shift. Or if I start the car and I shift it into gear and it shifts really hard I know it's not going to shift. So I was just wondering could both of these problems be the Computer PCM? I am thinking about replacing it soon but it's a $300 part and who knows the labor cost.

Forgive me for being too descriptive or long winded but I wanted to make sure I provided as much information and detail as possible to make the diagnosis much easier. I have a 2008 Dodge Charger 2.7L Engine and I’m experiencing TERRIBLE cranking/starting issues and NO ONE seems to be able to diagnose the issue! I’ve taken it to 3 mechanics now and I’m REALLY trying to avoid taking it to a Dealership (just too expensive for me right now). Here’s a break down and time line of what I’ve experienced thus far (and notice the inconsistencies) 1. (few months ago) Instead of me turning the fob and the car starting instantly as normal, I had to hold the fob in the start position for an extended 3-4 seconds before it would start. 2. (weeks later) 3-4 seconds sometimes grew to 5-6 seconds before it started. 3. (couple months ago) It went away and began starting instantly again. 4. (weeks later) It went back to the 3-6 second delay again but would still start. 5. (a month ago) It began “trying” to crank (turn over) but wouldn’t start. It would do this 1-3 times and then finally start. 6. (one day) It cranked and cranked (the engine was turning) but would NOT start at all. 7. (next day) It tried to crank and finally started. 8. I took the car to Autozone and let them test the battery and starter. And EVERYTHING checked out fine! 9. (next day) I checked all the fuses relating to ignition and starter. No fuses were blown. Relays looked ok too. When I started up the car the check engine light FINALLY came on for the first time. I drove the car to Autozone and their computer gave error codes P0335 (Crankshaft Sensor Circuit) and P0340 (Camshaft Sensor Intermittent). The tech told me to hold off on buying the parts since one of them had to be ordered and we really wasn’t sure which needed to be replaced (trying to be as cost efficient as possible). 10. (two days later) After trying to crank the car (the engine did not turn at all), it finally started after 10 minutes of trying. I drove to work and when I got ready to go home the car would NOT crank or start AT ALL! I tried to crank it for 45 minutes. It would not crank (turn over) at all. I left the car at my job and returned 2 hours later and installed a new Camshaft Sensor. And it still did absolutely NOTHING. After trying to crank it for about 30 minutes, I left it and returned later that evening. It still would not crank. I tried everything but one thing….jump starting it. I KNEW this wouldn’t work but what did I have to lose? Put the cables on and within about 2-3 minutes it started! Drove straight to Autozone and had them test the battery and starter again and their computer once again said everything checked out good. They said the jumpstart was a coincidence. 11. (next day) took it to a local auto shop. They also told me jump starting it was a coincidence, however, they could not get it to crank. They tried the fob, a portable battery jumper, and then they rolled out a big truck battery with cables attached to it and unsuccessfully tried to jump it. Just as they were about to push the car into the work area I suggested jumping the car with “another running car.” After 2-3 minutes….it tried to crank once or twice and finally started. Coincidence? I don’t know… 12. (next day) the car would not crank or start. I attached the jumper cables and again after 2-3 minutes it started. This time the car cranked/started PERFECTLY for 2 days straight! 13. (today) the car will NOT crank nor start. ANY AND ALL INFORMATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!! ANY SUGGESTIONS OR QUESTIONS PLEASE DON’T HESITATE TO POST! And I do mean “ANY!” P.S. Everything is STOCK. Stock radio, no amplifiers, no automatic starters, no added security systems, etc.
