The Fusion is a unique family sedan that offers a refreshing deviation from the "ho-hum" norm in the segment.
For decades, the Ford Sedan lineup was highlighted by the popular Taurus sedan, which halfway into the 21st Century was in need of an update. Its replacement came for the 2006 model year as the Fusion, a sporty, European-inspired sedan.
Much of the Fusion’s sporty nature is derived from sharing a platform with the Mazda6, a refined and athletic sedan. The Fusion shares much of this nature, and it adds a distinctive style all its own. This helps it stand out from tough competition, such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Chevrolet Malibu.

You won't be confusing the Fusion for any of those aforementioned rivals. Only the Accord can touch the Fusion on progressive styling. The Camry and Malibu go far more conservative, and as a result, you could lose them in a crowded parking lot. Meanwhile, the upright headlights, angular three-box design, and stout rear end convey the Fusion's sporty nature.
The cabin is not as exciting, but it matches the exterior in terms of sharp, angular design language. The center stack of controls is very straightforward and all the functions are easy to locate and use.
Standard features include a four-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, air conditioning, power door locks, remote keyless entry, and power windows.
The Fusion's look can be enhanced with the newly available Sport Appearance Package. It provides a rear spoiler, fog lamps, a smoked-out grille, and 18-inch aluminum wheels. Inside, the Sport Appearance Package adds leather seating surfaces with red inserts and red stitching.

The base engine is a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine, making 160 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque. If that’s just not enough, Ford also offers a 3.0-liter V6, putting out 221 horsepower and 205 pound-feet of torque.
The 4-cylinder engine routes power to the front wheels through either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. The V6 comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and can be had with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (AWD).
The 4-cylinder provides adequate acceleration and the manual transmission pays fuel economy dividends, but the V6 makes more robust acceleration, and the added capability of all-wheel drive will provide peace of mind in winter driving.
Despite being called the Sport “Appearance” Package, it actually adds some performance substance, in the form of a stiffer suspension. No added power, but no worries, as the Fusion has refined handling that even errs on sporty at times.

The Fusion provides 15.8 cubic feet of trunk space, which is better than the Honda Accord and equal to that of the Toyota Camry. The Malibu is a hair more spacious, at 15.1 cubic feet. The trunk space can be accessed via a helpful 60/40 split-fold rear seat.
The Fusion provides a decent amount of backseat legroom, and the angular design of the car allows for a straight enough roof to maintain solid rear headroom. Adults can sit here comfortably for a couple of hours.

Standard features on the Fusion include a four-speaker stereo with AM/FM/CD player, as well as an auxiliary audio jack. The SE trim adds a 6-disc CD player and steering wheel audio controls.
Buyers can select the “Moon and Tune” package, which adds a moonroof and an upgraded Audiophile stereo with 6-disc CD changer and eight speakers.
The Fusion is also optional with Ford’s SYNC communications system which provides hands-free connectivity with your smartphone. This allows for hands-free calling, as well as the ability to stream your music from your phone.

For 2008, the Fusion adds previously optional safety features such as an ABS system and a tire pressure monitoring system as standard equipment. This joins the full array of front- and side-impact airbags that come standard on the Fusion.
Traction control is an option on the Fusion, though models equipped with all-wheel drive include this feature as standard equipment. The Fusion is also available with rear parking sensors.

The most efficient version of the Fusion is the 4-cylinder with the manual, returning 20 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, 23 combined. The 4-cylinder with the automatic transmission returns 20 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, 23 combined.
If you are considering the V6, the more efficient version is with AWD, returning 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, 21 mpg combined. With AWD, that drops to 17 mpg city, That’s not great fuel economy, but it is the tradeoff for V6 power and AWD.
Base MSRP for the 2008 Ford Fusion is $18,135. The SEL trim starts at $20,150. A V6 Fusion SE starts at $23,660, while the SEL V6 with AWD starts at $24,750. These prices actually undercut the 2008 Honda Accord, making the Fusion a solid value.

We bought the car in 2014, with only 50,000 miles on it. We drove it for 9 years, put on over 100,000 miles, and it had very little issues. The transmission gave out in 2023 with 156,000 miles on the car, and it was time to move on. It was a great car, worked well for our small family, easily fitting 2 car seats in the back, and was a great purchase. I like the looks, the fact that it is a four door and has some room inside is good. The ride is comfortable and smooth. Mine is a manual transmission. Gets great gas mileage and is very reliable. Overall I would recommend it to anyone.Apr 18, 2014

The vehicle excelled in acceleration and handling. Had many safety features. The Fusion has a premium sound system along with Sirus radio and a 6 cd changer. Driving the Fusion was such a pleasure with it's smooth ride, quiet and comfortable interior.Mar 09, 2014

Very nice for the price....one day I would like to upgrade to a MKZ. SYNC is awesome. I would like a moon roof. This version of the fusion could be more of a rabbit. It corners very nicely but standing on the gas leaves me wanting a bit more power but for around town it is pretty perfect.Feb 03, 2014

lacks power, handling is benign at best, noisy under acceleration. On the plus side, it is reliable, comfortable even on long drives, and has above-average amenities and sound system. overall, for the price I paid it has been one of the better values among the automobiles I have owned.Oct 21, 2012

Great little car, would certainly recommend for first car. Mine had the SAP
package which included color coded fog surrounds, mirror caps, 18" wheels with
sportier tires (same tires the mustang came with that year), sport leather/cloth
interior. Had a decent sound system, the damn thing just ran, but being a
bigger 4cyl and down on power (only made about 160hp) you really have to
push it to get it up to speed which makes the fuel economy suffer. 60% hwy to
40% city I was averaging about 24mpg, which should be much better in a 2.3L
4cyl car. My car also had the 5spd auto where later models had 6spds, which

Was happy with the car until we started having issues with the vehicle. Randomly slammed itself into 1st gear while going highway speed. Took it to the dealer and was told there was a problem with a "seal" and it was replaced. Was ok for a little while, but then whenever going uphill, the vehicle would slam into the next hear. Took the vehicle back 3 more times before threatening lemon law to get the problem fixed. Complete transmission replacement(lucky we had the extended warranty as it happened just after 50,000 miles) Electrical started acting up, and cruise control stopped working completely after transmission replacement. I think it looks good for a family sedan and it is very practical. It is very reliable and I have only had two mandatory services because the milage is still low. AWD is great for traction in the snow or mud. Consumption is around 19 to 20 mpg accourding to the onboard computer. There is plenty of V6 power on tap so it is a pleasure to drive. The sound system is great for my needs and it is very comfortable to drive with great handling as well.Jun 09, 2012

Just a totally superb car, well made. My husband bought mine wrecked, and I thought--man, this is going to be horrendous to fix. Well, it took a little while (the front and left side had to be re-done and bondo-ed--I'll post pics later so you can see how long my husband worked on it!) and overall, I thought I'd be a money pit. We paid a little over 4,000 (I should mention this car had 18K miles when purchased and was approximately a year old--so that tells you that whoever bought it bought to ride it hard and fast!) but the car was an beauty inside. Other than the obvious parts that needed replacement/cosmetic work, the inside of the car was a beauty (black leather!)and well worth what my husband paid for it.
He dumped an additional 4-5k in parts into it. By the time I got it, I thought for sure it wouldn't ride. But it worked and it drives like a dream. It accelerates smoothly, braking is excellent as well as handling. You wouldn't know it had ever been wrecked unless you had seen it before.
Interior, as I said, leather. What else is there to say? As for exterior, ugly when it started, a beauty by the end. Styling is excellent and Ford did a great job with both interior and exterior styling. This car is made to be driven as a family car but if you're single and looking for a hot car that will lead into the next stage of your life, this car is it.
Cost of ownership is a middle of the road--I use fully synthetic oil, but I make my own oil changes, and I bleed my own brakes when necessary, so it's fairly easy to maintain and keep running well.

Looks good, beats v6 camaros and mustangs, gets good gas mileage. Do not get an automatic if possible, i wish every day that i had a manual. for 15k not too expensive. The ford fusion I drive rides very nice with a fairly good and stiff suspension. Along with the wheels I have I find it is a very nice looking car and is unlike many cars on the road which I like. This was the first brand new car i ever bought, i know have 35k on it. the car has great pick up for a 4 cylinder. the car drives good, brakes good, and i love the gas mileage. I like the car overall and it was priced right. the only thing i dont like would be all the stupid minor problems that i have had like small plastics inside breaking or rattling. i have also had a transmission problem but, it was and still is under the warr. Acceleration is good enough but i did opt for the 2.3 four cylinder for fuel economy.It is a very well built car no problems yet just regular oil changes and tire rotations 28000 km on it so far.It is a very good looking car that hugs the road great i would like to take the sport edition for a drive.The car gets about 7.8 L for 100 km on the highway and about 8.5 L in the everyday running around. great car to drive, I would recommend it to anybodySep 30, 2009

I love everything about this car. There are only a few options that, in comparison to a Lexus, it doesn't have. The warranty is great, it performs like crazy on the highway, and I wouldn't trade it in for anything. I like it, although it gets pretty loud sometime but when you get on the high way it rides....!!! I have but 27,000 miles on in a year and it hasn't needed any repairs. The exterior of it is amazing...although i've nicked it a few times. The gas runs pretty good and of course oil change in about 6 or 7 months normally for the rate at which i drive it. This is a really comfortable car that is fun to drive. In the desire to reduce the amount of gas I was using, I opted for the 4 cylinder model with the 5 speed automatic. Acceleration is sluggish off the start but once the rpm's increase, the car can accelerate pretty fast. Plenty of power to merge or pass on the highway. The tail end of the car is high, limited view out of the back window. The back of the car also curves in toward the end so seeing the end of the car in the mirrors is impossible. Performance -
The AWD on the Ford Fusion is great! It handles wonderfully in the snow. The 3.0L DOHC V6 has adequate power for the car. There could be a bit more power I believe. Braking is not a problem with 4 wheel disc brakes. There is a bit of body roll, which could be fixed with a strut tower bar, rear sway bar, and possibly a front subframe X-brace. (All available from Steeda)
Build Quality
Seems to be good. There are no squeaks or rattles while driving. I have had this car for 4 months (August 08 to December 08) and I have had no mechanical problems.
Appearance -
Decent. It has good body lines and looks "sporty" to some people. Interior seems to be lacking quality in the dash, but all other areas are great. The leather seats are comfortable and the heated seat option works wonders.
Cost of Ownership -
Gas mileage is not too bad. The sticker for the V6 SEL AWD is 18 city and 25 highway. The car stays close to these figures. I have gotten 26.7 on the highway on a long trip. Maintenance seems to be carefree for the most part. So far, I have only changed the oil. Nothing else has had any issues that need attention.
Fun Factor -
This car is a blast to drive. It grips to the road wonderfully, even in the snow. When you want to be a little "reckless" you can turn the TCS off and do as you please. The car does have its limits though.
Overall -
This car is a great sedan overall. There is plenty of leg room in the front as well in the back. The trunk has ample room for many items. I think its a great buy for the money.Dec 25, 2008

Our Fusion is great in town or when we travel. We have lots of room for packing. We get great gas mileage and it is so much fun to drive. We also love our navigation and sirius radio system. It is a very nice car. I have the Sport Appearance Package with leather and the Moon and Tune Package. I love the red insert and stichting on the seats. THe 18 inch wheels are a very nice touch as well as the lip spoiler. The manual transmission adds some fun to drive factor to the 4 cylinder, even though shifting can be clanky. There is a lot of trunk space and the rear seats fold flat. Overall I am very pleased with the car.May 05, 2008

It's hard to believe, I know. But, Ford is finally making great vehicles again and it looks as though the Fusion is leading the renaissance. Take one part Mazda6 (6's platform to be exact), powerful 4-cylinder and V6 engines, bold styling, a nice interior, some interesting technology, and you have a definite viable alternative to the bland Toyota Camry and boring Honda Accord. The ride is surprisingly great with the agility and power of a Mazda6 s and I'm amazed at how quiet the car is when traveling at least 55 mph. The Sync system is AWESOME which is amazing considering it's from Microsoft. There's no reason to avoid Ford cars anymore. This car is definitely worth checking out.Feb 09, 2008
