The Pontiac G6 injects a bit of excitement into the daily commute, but it falls behind other midsize sedans on cabin quality.
Midsize sedans are efficient, reliable, and practical. These attributes are what make them so popular. But if you crave a bit more excitement in your family sedan, the 2008 Pontiac G6 has got you covered. The G6 delivers bold styling and powerful, available V6 engines. It also offers a Coupe variant, as well as an innovative power-retractable hardtop convertible. This design combines top-down motoring, as well as confident four-season protection from the elements.

The G6 has sharp, angular styling, highlighted by the twin-kidney grille and wedged headlights. That wedge theme is continued along the side of the car and in the angular taillights. The Coupe features a teardrop shape that forms the rear window and trunk area. The Convertible’s power-retracting hardtop looks sharp while deployed, but the rear trunk lid has an awkward hunch when the top is stowed. The cabin features a simple and straightforward design that evokes a performance nature. But the materials and fit-and-finish are lacking.
There are technically four trims offered on the G6 Sedan; 1SV, Base, GT, and GXP. The 1SV stands for “Special Value” and provides the basics, including power doors and locks, air conditioning, and a tilt-telescoping steering wheel. The Base trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, and cruise control.
Pontiac offers the GT trim across all three body styles, and it's the only trim for the Convertible. It adds a 200-watt Monsoon premium sound system and a four-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. The Sedan and Coupe can be had in the GXP trim, which adds a leather interior, chrome dual exhaust tips, and revised front- and rear fascias.

1SV and Base trims come fitted with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine making 169 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. This engine routes power to the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The mid-range GT features a 3.5-liter V6. It makes 224 horsepower and 220 pound-feet of torque, sent to the front wheels through a four-speed automatic.
In addition to the visual upgrades, the GXP boasts the most powerful engine in the lineup. It displaces 3.6 liters, features dual overhead cams and variable valve timing, and makes 252 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. This engine routes power to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. The GXP also features a sport-tuned suspension and provides the best acceleration and handling in the G6 lineup.

The G6 sedan provides a surprising amount of cabin space. A taller driver can slide their seat back comfortably, and another taller occupant can sit behind them with sufficient legroom. There is also plenty of headroom in both rows. The Coupe and Convertible have less legroom, but only slightly. Thanks to the long wheelbase, the G6 provides more rear legroom than other coupes and convertibles.
Trunk space for the G6 sedan is on par with the leaders in the pack. It provides 14 cubic feet, which is the same as the Honda Accord and only slightly behind that of the Toyota Camry. The Coupe provides 11 cubic feet of trunk space is adequate. The Convertible’s advanced top takes up a good bit of real estate. There is only 5.8 cubic feet of trunk space with the top up, and a minuscule 1.5 cubic feet with the top down.

The G6 comes standard with an AM/FM stereo with CD player and OnStar services. The GT trim upgrades the stereo to a 200-watt Monsoon sound system. The GT and GXP trims both provide XM satellite radio, as well as an auxiliary audio input.

Pontiac has added several previously optional safety features as standard equipment. This includes antilock brakes across all trims, side airbags, and OnStar telematics. OnStar can remotely call for help in the event of an accident.
These features join a list of standard equipment that includes driver and front passenger front impact airbags and varying levels of traction control, depending on the trim selected.

The four-cylinder G6 provides the best fuel economy in the lineup, returning 22 mpg city, 30 highway, 25 combined. The most-efficient V6 is the 3.5-liter when paired to the four-speed automatic. It returns 18/29/22. The 3.9-liter V6 returns 15/22/18.
The 2008 Pontiac G6 starts at $18,765 for the 1SV trim. A base trim starts at $20,290, while a GT starts at $23,100 and the GXP sedan costs $26,960. The Coupe starts at $23,100 in the GT trim, and a GXP Coupe costs $27,755. The Convertible costs $30,210 and is only offered in the GT trim.

The cars acceleration for this V6 is brutal. It will throw you side to side if you don't
respect it. The brakes stop on a dime. The car is more than willing to be thrown
around corners. It seems quite happy to be driven hard. The build quality is very
well. There is nothing else that looks like the GXP on the road today. If you put
cruise control on the highway at about 70 mph, you can get about 36 MPG.

Good looking car, very reliable, pretty good ride. Nice all around commuter car. Head lights are very good and lights up the road well, I added HID and usually that’s a big improvement but they were not a big deal but made the car look better at night. Only 2 problems in 125,000 miles; First the Catalytic Converter clogged but warranty covered that, 2nd variable valve timing solenoid failed, out of warranty so I got one online $60 and installed it in about 10 minutes, very easy to access. Only had to replace front pads twice and rear pads once.Sep 08, 2013

I dislike the turning radius of this car; also its backing characteristics. Huge blind spot. On the plus side, I enjoy its performance. It's very quick and agile in cornering and stable on curves. Braking capability is excellent. In all a nice ride. Buy another? Nah!Apr 20, 2013

I have had my Pontiac G6 (base, V6, 17' stock wheels) for two years now. There have been no unexpected repairs besides the intermediate shaft in the steering column (very common, is annoying, but doesn't need to be fixed.) Power is available at pretty much any time. Gas mileage has been about 19 observed, which I am OK with. My major gripe is that the trip and service computer is displayed thru the radio so I cannot easily upgrade the stereo. Overall I am happy with the vehicle, and it would be a great first car.

I really like this car. But I've always liked the pontiac approach at style. Pontiac's were always the sportest of the GM line. It's a shame the did away with them. Performance is outstanding, acceleration is good, braking stops on a dime, handles like a sports car with responsive steering.
Car itself is pretty nice nothing wrong from factory.
It's quite fun to drive and it handles like a charm. Sound system is the bomb, stock sounds better than most aftermarket systems.

Sadly GM has dropped pontiac these days but im lucky to have one of their best models ever made. my 08 G6 is an all around beauty. Performance: Acceleration and handling is great; braking feels a little heavy, but still good.
Build Quality: I do have a squeezy wheel and trying to get it under sprayed to see if that helps.
Appearance: I love black, but there is a white film that I cannot get rid of in front of each rear wheel, plus because the hood slopes so low, it get's chipped very easily by stones.
Cost of Ownership: I haven't had any maintenance other then usual oil change so far; gas isn't the greatest either

Well as for performance, it is relatively quick for a four cylinder(there is for room for improvement to be added later). I bought it for gas mileage at the time I got it, so I did not expect much. As for build quality, it is a great car with good fit, no squeaks or rattles have developed yet. As for overall looks I like it inside and out, but would love it more if I opted for the metallic black. Right now this cars cost of ownership is low, great gas mileage and low maintenance costs. The car is great fun to drive, I love the sound of the engine, the sound system(factory by the way) and the seats are great, they really hold you in well. As for recommending this car to a friend, yes I would, but I would recommend the bigger engines if they want a little more power and are not just looking for a car that is easy on gas.Oct 25, 2008

for a base model, 4cyl, 4 door sedan, the car is sporty and useful. i can go vroom vroom, and still pick up my grocieries and take my dog out. the acceleration and braking arent too touchy which i love, and the interior isnt fancy schmancy, but its easy to keep clean, and my dashboard tells me how many miles are left on my tank, my tire pressure, when i need an oil change, my average speed, my average mpg etc. the stock sterio system thumps like it has a sub in it, and the controls are so easy to use. i get great gas mileage, i drive on average 240 miles a week or more, and my tank will last me longer than a week, even how i drive (with a lead foot.) i just recently got an oil change at 5000 miles (i know its a sin) but i still had 45% oil life left. its very stylish, a beautiful body design, theyve taken off the door moldings this year, which makes the whole car look smoother. i love my freaking car.Aug 24, 2008

I absolutely love this car! I previously had a 2005 GT model but had to upgrade to the 2008 GXP. It is worth the extra headaches and hours I had to pick up at work in order to afford this. Looks sporty and handles beautifully. If you get one, get the GXP Street Edition, thats what I have, it is the top of the line model. Nice leather seats and the sound system is great.
