As the entry-level trim for this front-wheel-drive, full-size sedan, the 2008 Chevrolet Impala LS is both roomy and well-equipped. Not only does it come with an 18.6-cubic-foot trunk, but rear legroom reaches nearly 37 inches, while front legroom maxes out at 42 inches. The sedan seats five comfortably, but six can squeeze in with the optional split-folding bench seat in front.
A 3.5-liter, flex-fuel V6 with variable valve timing sits under the hood, matched with a 4-speed automatic. It delivers 211 hp and 214 ft-lbs of torque at 4,000 RPM. Fuel economy averages 18/29 mpg. Riding on an independent front and rear suspension, the 2008 Impala LS receives four and five stars in crash tests. Dual front-side airbags with passenger deactivation, 16-inch steel wheels with all-season tires, and 4-wheel disc brakes are standard. ABS brakes and traction control are options for the LS trim. Also included are a tire monitor, OnStar, automatic headlights, and halogen lamps. Larger 17-inch wheels are available.
A basic family car, the 2008 Impala LS features stadium-style seating for better rear passenger visibility. The sedan seats five in front bucket seats and a second-row bench, arranged stadium-style. A front-row bench is optional. The trunk holds 18.6 cubic feet of cargo and comes with a net. The 2008 Impala LT runs on a 211-hp, 3.5-liter, 12-valve V6 with variable valve timing. The engine qualifies as an E85 flex-fuel vehicle. It is paired with a 4-speed automatic with overdrive, and together they rate 18/29 mpg. The smooth ride comes courtesy of an independent front and rear suspension.
A long list of standard equipment keeps drivers and passengers happy. These include a 6-way power driver's seat, power windows, locks, and mirrors, remote entry, wheel-mounted cruise control, hands-free phone controls, and a CD/MP3 player with input jack and satellite radio. Intermittent wipers, a tachometer, tilt steering, a trip computer, and two front 12-volt power outlets are also standard. Faux wood trim decorates the interior. The LT offers more options, including a sunroof and garage opener. Also available are roof rails, a rear spoiler, wheel-mounted audio controls, a 6-CD changer, a split-folding rear seat, leather trim, and heated leather seats. A flip-and-fold-flat rear seat option expands cargo capacity.
The 2008 Impala LT earns five stars in frontal impact tests and four in side impact and rollover tests. 4-wheel disc brakes are standard, with the option to add 4-wheel ABS. Also part of the safety profile are dual front-side airbags with passenger deactivation, OnStar, automatic headlights, foglights, and halogen lamps. The 16-inch steel wheels with all-season tires come with a tire monitor, and larger 17-inch wheels cost extra. Traction control and an auto-dimming rearview mirror are also optional.

A bigger engine sits in the 2008 Chevrolet Impala 2LT. Its 3.9-liter, flex-fuel E85 V6 delivers 233 hp and 240 ft-lbs of torque at 4,000 RPM in this full-size sedan. Paired with a four-speed automatic, the front-wheel-drive Impala 2LT averages 18/28 mpg. This engine also features Active Fuel Management, which deactivates cylinders for the sake of efficiency.
Moving up to the 2008 Impala 2LT also gets you standard 4-wheel ABS in addition to the 4-wheel disc brakes and electronic brakeforce distribution. Traction and stability control are also both standard, joining the dual front-side and side curtain airbags for both rows. Automatic headlights, halogen lamps, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and foglights take care of lighting. Larger 17-inch wheels with all-season tires come with a tire monitor. OnStar adds extra security.
Many of the options for the LT are standard on the 2LT. Upgrades include wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, a 60/40 split-folding rear bench that opens onto the 18.6-cubic-foot trunk, remote start, and leather trim. A slightly sportier version of this front-wheel-drive full-size sedan, the 2008 Chevrolet Impala LTZ boasts a stiffer performance suspension. However, it carries the same 233-hp, 3.9-liter V6 and 4-speed automatic as the LT trims. This powertrain gets 240 ft-lbs of torque at 4,000 RPM and around 18/28 mpg, though active cylinder deactivation improves fuel economy somewhat. This engine is E85 compatible. Other sporty upgrades include a rear spoiler, larger 18-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, leather upholstery, and heated seats and mirrors. Both front seats are now power-adjustable, with the driver's seat moving up to 8-way, and a front passenger getting a 6-way seat. The LTZ features a better 8-speaker Bose sound system as well.
Already standard on the 2008 Impala LTZ are a full power setup, which includes remote entry and remote start, a garage opener, and wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls. A CD player comes with an MP3 input jack and six months of satellite radio. On the dash sit a trip computer, tachometer, temperature display and compass, and wood trim. Leather covers the steering wheel and shifter. Intermittent wipers, two front power outlets, a standard cargo net, dual-zone climate control, and tilt steering are also standard. The sedan seats five in two rows, with a 60/40 split-folding rear seat opening onto a larger 18.6-cubic-foot trunk. Rear legroom is only 37 inches, however. A front split-folding bench is available.
The 2006 Impala LTZ earns four and five stars in crash tests (four in rollover ratings). It comes well-equipped with traction and stability control, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, and dual front-side airbags with passenger deactivation and side curtain airbags for both rows. Other safety features include OnStar, automatic halogen headlights, foglights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a tire monitor. There are few options left for the 2008 Impala LTZ, but you can add a power sunroof and shade, a 6-CD changer, and smaller 17-inch alloy wheels.

You wouldn't be far off if you guessed that the SS in the 2008 Chevrolet Impala SS stands for sports sedan. This full-size, front-wheel-drive car gets a power and performance boost. Riding on a stiffer performance suspension, the 2008 Impala SS hits 303 hp with a 5.3-liter, 16-valve V8 engine. The transmission is a heavy-duty version of the four-speed automatic, and the powertrain puts out 323 ft-lbs of torque at 4,000 RPM. Fuel economy slips to 16/24 mpg, but the V8 features Active Fuel Management, which cuts off half the cylinders when idle or at cruising speed. The SS also adds performance tires to the 18-inch alloy wheels.
Other than alloy interior accents that replace the wood in other trims, the 2008 Impala SS is much like the LTZ. An 8-way power driver's and 6-way power passenger seat highlight the power features, which include locks, windows, and mirrors; remote start; remote entry; and wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls for the CD/MP3 player with input jack and satellite radio. Heated leather seats and leather trim decorate the interior. Also standard are two front power outlets, a tachometer, a trip computer, intermittent wipers, a security system, and a temperature display and compass. Available options include an 8-speaker Bose system, 6-CD changer, a power sunroof with sunshade, heated mirrors, and a garage opener.
Rear seats split-fold 60/40 and come with a folding armrest. The front buckets can be replaced with a split-folding bench as well. The 18.6-cubic-foot trunk features a cargo net. A rear spoiler improves performance. Safety-wise, the 2008 Impala SS features all the standard equipment. Traction and stability control, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, dual front-side airbags with passenger deactivation, side curtain airbags for both rows, a tire monitor, and OnStar are all part of the package. At night, the automatic headlights with halogen lamps, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and foglights come in handy.
