The 1997 Mazda 626 did not receive any major changes for the year, as a redesign was on the horizon for the following year.
The 1997 Mazda 626 is available in four trims: the base DX, the midrange LX and LX V6, and the ES. The ES is the high-end version, coming well-equipped with amenities such as power seats and leather upholstery and the V6. The base engine is a 2.0-liter, 118-horsepower four cylinder. The V6 boasts 2.5 liters and 164 horsepower. Fuel economy for the base engine was 23/31, and for the V6 it was 20/26.
Many 1997 Mazda 626 drivers like the car because it handles well, is fun to drive, has a comfortable interior, and gets reasonably good gas mileage. Some owners have had problems with flakey paint, and there is a lot of concern about the automatic transmission, which many say tend to fail at about 75 thousand miles.

i am so cheap that i would gladly own this car again. perfect car for your teenage daughter. dependabe but boring. wont turn heads. very low cost of ownership and driving cost. i have to add that the body held up well in rusty PA. the trans is a little loose but probably needs a flush.Mar 20, 2014

This car is reliable. We have had no major problems with it. All it required was basic maintenance throughout the years. It starts fast and runs quiet. It handles well. The air conditioner in it works better than our other cars. The gas mileage is great 26 mpg in town, 32 hwy.Jun 10, 2011

I like the 626 as a daily driver. It is not the fastest or most fun car I have every driven, but if you stand on the skinny pedal it will get on down the road. I wish I could say more.Sep 12, 2009

Its a nice car but has a lot of problems and you have to take it to a mazda delar for repair cause garages dont work on it . Its pretty expensive for parts but besides that not to exspencive. The car is boring to drive. It's a car for the new and old drivers.Sep 04, 2008

my 626 is somewhat old but it looks good still and it has a decent ammount of kilometers for being a "97". i pimped it out as much as i could but there is no mods that you can buy online for this thing. its not really that fast either. Jul 21, 2008
